Use an alternative verification method or have MFA reset; otherwise access cannot be regained.

    1. If another MFA method is configured (SMS, phone call, alternate email, security key):
      • On the sign-in screen, choose “I don’t have my Microsoft Authenticator app” (or similar) and select another method such as text message or phone call.
      • Complete sign-in using that method, then go to your security info page (for work/school accounts this is typically at https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo) and:
      – Add a new Microsoft Authenticator app on your current phone.
      – Or add another MFA method (phone, SMS) so you are not locked to the app only.
    2. If no alternative method works and this is a work or school account:
      • Contact the organization’s IT admin or Help desk and ask them to reset your MFA or “Require re-register multifactor authentication” for your user in Microsoft Entra ID.
      • After they do this, sign in again and reconfigure Microsoft Authenticator on your device.
    3. If you are the only admin on a business tenant and are locked out:
      • Call Microsoft using the global customer service phone numbers and ask to be routed to the Data Protection team to reset your admin MFA, as described in the Q&A guidance.
      • Alternatively, create a temporary trial tenant, go to its admin center, and open a support ticket requesting Data Protection help for the original locked tenant.
    4. If repeated attempts are failing due to many sign-in tries:
      • Wait before trying again or use a different MFA method if available.
      • If you suspect suspicious activity, contact your IT admin so they can review Microsoft Entra sign-in logs.

If none of the above is possible and there is no admin who can reset MFA, direct support from Microsoft (Data Protection team) is required; forum or app steps alone cannot bypass MFA.
