    Hi robert

Sorry you’re going through this, and I appreciate you sharing the issue with me.

To better assist you and narrow down the cause, could you please provide a little more information?

    1. Does the line spacing issue happen in one specific Word document, or does it occur in all Word documents?
    2. Are you using the Word desktop app, Word for the web, or Word on Mac/mobile?
    3. When you change the line spacing, does the setting not apply at all, or does it apply incorrectly?
    4. Are other formatting options affected as well, such as font size, alignment, paragraph spacing, or styles?
    5. Could you please share a screenshot, if possible?

Once I have this information, I'll be better positioned to guide you through the next steps.

In the meantime, since you haven’t specified your account type (work/school vs. personal), I may not be able to provide an exact solution yet. Assuming you’re using a work account, please try the workarounds below. If you’re using a personal account, please let me know and I’ll tailor the guidance for that scenario.

1/ Check the line spacing and paragraph spacing settings

    • In Word, please select the affected text, then go to Home > Line and Paragraph Spacing > Line Spacing Options.
    • User's image
    • In the Paragraph window, check the Line spacing value and also the Before/After paragraph spacing values. You may set Before and After to 0 pt if no extra paragraph spacing is needed.

2/ Clear the existing formatting and reapply it

    • Select the affected text and choose Home > Clear All Formatting, then apply the desired line spacing again. This can help if the document contains hidden or conflicting formatting.
    •  User's image

3/ Test in a new blank Word document

    • Try creating a new blank document, type a few sample lines, and test the same line spacing settings. This will help confirm whether the issue is document-specific or affecting Word overall.

4/ If the issue only happens in one document, copy the content into a new file

    • You can copy the content from the affected document and paste it into a new blank Word document using Keep Text Only, then reapply the formatting.
    • This can help remove corrupted or conflicting formatting from the original document.

5/ Restart Word and check for Office updates

    • If you are using the Word desktop app, please restart Word and check for updates by going to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.

I hope this helps clarify the available options. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to share them in the comment below.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding.

I'm looking forward to your response.

Several different issues can make Word’s line spacing appear to “malfunction.” Work through these checks and fixes:

    1. Check the line spacing setting in Paragraph
The spacing may be set to an exact height that is too small or to an unexpected value.
      1. Select the affected text.
      2. Go to Home > Line and Paragraph Spacing > Line Spacing Options.
      3. Under Spacing, in Line spacing:
        • Avoid Exactly if characters are being cut off or lines look wrong. Use Single, 1.5 lines, or Multiple instead.
        • If Exactly must be used, make sure At is slightly larger than the font size (for example, 11 pt line spacing for 10 pt text).
      4. Adjust Before and After spacing if there is too much space between paragraphs.
      5. Click Set as Default and choose All documents based on the Normal template if the change should apply to new documents.
    2. Fix characters that look cut off or missing
If underscores, accents, or parts of letters are missing or clipped on screen:
      1. Select the affected text.
      2. Open the Paragraph dialog (Home > Paragraph launcher).
      3. On Indents and Spacing, change Line spacing from Exactly to Single (or another non‑exact option).
      4. If needed, increase the At value slightly above the font size (for example, 11 pt for 10 pt text).
      5. If the problem persists, try a different font or a slightly smaller font size than the exact line spacing value.
    3. Increase spacing when text is clipped by shapes or special fonts
If text is clipped when using certain OpenType fonts or stylistic sets:
      1. Right‑click the affected paragraph and choose Paragraph.
      2. On Indents and Spacing, increase Line spacing under Spacing.
      3. For a single line, you can instead increase Before or After spacing.
    4. Check for in‑line objects that behave like large characters
If a word jumps to a new line or spacing looks wrong near a line or shape:
      1. Turn on formatting marks (¶) to see hidden objects.
      2. If a line or shape is in‑line with text, insert a paragraph mark immediately after the preceding word so the object sits in its own paragraph.
      3. The text should then flow normally.
    5. Confirm the view mode and web limitations
      • In Word for the web, line spacing changes do not persist as a new default; each new document reverts to 1.15. This is by design.
      • In Word Web App (older Word Online), line spacing cannot be adjusted at all; only basic paragraph formatting is available. Use the desktop Word app to fully control line spacing.
    6. Reset default spacing if all documents look wrong
If every document suddenly shows odd spacing:
      1. Open any document in the desktop Word app.
      2. Go to Home > Line and Paragraph Spacing > Line Spacing Options.
      3. Set Line spacing to Single or Multiple 1.15 and adjust Before/After as desired.
      4. Select Set as Default > All documents based on the Normal template > OK.

If these steps are applied and spacing still appears incorrect, capture whether the problem is only on screen (but prints correctly) or also in print/PDF; display‑only issues are often caused by zoom level or printer driver, while true layout problems are resolved by adjusting line spacing and fonts as above.
