Mount a shared Genie Agent

Important

Genie Agent sharing using OpenSharing is in Beta.

When a data provider shares a Genie Agent with you using OpenSharing, you can mount that share to create a local Genie Agent in your workspace. The local agent comes pre-loaded with the provider's data assets and instructions so you can start asking questions right away.

You have full ownership of your local Genie Agent. You can add your own data, modify the instructions, and reconfigure the agent. Your changes do not affect the provider's original agent.

For information about how providers share Genie Agents, see Share a Genie Agent using OpenSharing.

Requirements

To mount a shared Genie Agent, you must have the following:

  • USE PROVIDER privilege on the Unity Catalog metastore in your workspace, or ownership of the provider object.
  • CREATE CATALOG privilege on your Unity Catalog metastore.
  • Access to a pro or serverless SQL warehouse in your workspace.

Mount a shared Genie Agent

  1. In your Azure Databricks workspace, click Data icon. Catalog.

  2. At the top of the Catalog pane, click the Gear icon. gear icon and select OpenSharing.

Alternatively, in the upper-right corner, click Share > OpenSharing.

  3. Find and select the provider who shared the Genie Agent with you.

  4. Find the share that contains the Genie Agent and click Mount as Genie agent.

  5. Optionally, expand Advanced options to specify the catalog name, SQL warehouse, and workspace folder. Azure Databricks provides defaults based on the provider and share names.

  6. Click Mount.

Azure Databricks mounts the share's data to the catalog you specified in your Unity Catalog metastore and creates a local Genie Agent pre-loaded with the provider's data assets and instructions. Azure Databricks rewrites all table references in the instructions and SQL examples to point to your mounted catalog.

Work with your mounted Genie Agent

Your local Genie Agent comes with:

  • All of the provider's data assets, available through a catalog in your Unity Catalog metastore.
  • The provider's instructions, curated SQL examples, and SQL functions, rewritten to reference your mounted catalog.

Your local Genie Agent is yours to modify. You can:

  • Add your own tables and views.
  • Edit or extend the instructions and SQL examples.
  • Share the agent with other users in your workspace.
  • Reconfigure or change the SQL warehouse.

Note

The provider's tables are read-only. You can query them but cannot write to them.

Find your mounted agent

After mounting, your new Genie Agent appears in the standard Genie Agents list in your workspace. The mounted catalog also appears in Catalog Explorer under the name you specified or the autogenerated default.

Limitations

  • External sharing: You cannot share the mounted Genie Agent with users outside your organization using OpenSharing. OpenSharing recipients cannot re-share data assets received from a provider.
