How to install the Mobility Service - ASR Exclude Disks

Hello, I am configuring Azure Site Recovery and have the need to exclude disks from replication. I have reviewed the requirements, and this seems to require the following...

-Can't be an OS disk
-Must be a basic disk
-Mobility Service must be installed.

OS disk and basic disk requirements are easy. However, the Mobility Service up to this point has been installed automatically by the replication appliance only after replication is setup.

During the config of replication you are presented with this screen. From VMware to Azure in my case.

Notice no disks can be excluded. When clicking the blue "mobility service" link on this page, I am taken to the following url..

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/site-recovery/upgrade-mobility-service-modernized

On this page there is a bunch of talk about an upgrade of the service, but I am not seeing any instructions for installing the mobility agent from scratch manually in order to meet this exclude disk requirement for replication config. Can anyone point me in the right direction? how is this service installed if not automatically through the ASR setup wizard?

Regards
Adam Tyler

Hello @AdamTyler-3590 Thank you for posting your question. Happy to help!

From the description of your post, I understand that you want to use Azure Site Recovery exclude feature while performing replication. Azure Site Recovery supports excluding disks from replication with both the classic and modernized replication appliances. The requirements for excluding disks from replication are the same for both appliances:

    • The disk must be a basic disk.
    • The disk cannot be the operating system disk.
    • The Mobility Service must be installed on the source machine.

Once these requirements are met, you can exclude disks from replication by going to Replication > Replication Settings > Advanced Settings > Disks. From there, you can select the disks that you want to exclude from replication.

Regarding installation of "mobility service agent" for excluding disks from replication, you can do so using the instructions from the link - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/site-recovery/vmware-physical-mobility-service-overview#install-the-mobility-service-using-command-prompt-modernized that you already found and shared in the previous post.

In short - Yes, you have answered your own question! :)
