There are multiple recipients matching the identity "email". Can't create distribution group.

Am creating an email distribution group. Most of the users are not part of my domain. One user is listed under both "Contacts" (admin.microsoft.com) AND listed under Guest User because she has access to our Teams (for work). The Contact email address is a typical gmail address. The Guest User address is similar but with #EXT#@yatescommunitycenter.onmicrosoft.com at the end of the email address. I thought a "contact" had to be added as a member of a distribution list, but when I try, this person errors out (see Title). Can I only have the person under one of these headings? Looking for any information - thanks.

Do not provide the email address, use his GUID/ExternalDirectoryObjectId value instead.

    Hi,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

The error message “There are multiple recipients matching the identity” typically occurs when multiple mailboxes or mail contacts share the same display name.

So, I recommend you change the display name of that user. If that doesn't work , you may need to remove the user from “contacts” or “Guest User”.

Please feel free to contact me for any updates. And if this helps, don’t forget to mark it as an answer.

    Resolution:

I created the distribution list on it's own and THEN added the members. It worked. If I created the distribution list and added the members in the same process - I got the error.
