This unit deepens understanding of the framework by analyzing how it applies to specific age and grade levels. Begin by exploring the Curriculum Framework.

Page 2 of the Computer Science Framework details the big ideas, essential questions, and domains. In level 1 and 2, for example, learners explore all six domains - half in level 1 and half in level 2. This structure repeats through level 9.

On page 3 of the Computer Science Framework, a table shows that Phase 3 of the framework recommends six labs that cover all six domains in level 10. These labs are followed by six short open-ended projects in year two, referred to as sprints. Furthermore, in Phase 4 the framework specifies 18 labs in level 12 followed by three longer-term, open-ended projects called pitches in the final year.

Finally, page 4 of the Computer Science Framework is a chronological and conceptual view of the framework. This color-coordinated chart provides a quick look at the domain, essential questions, and big ideas covered across grade and age spans.

The next independent activity is to read the key points of each big idea for each domain. Underline, circle, or write out the key phrases or verbs from each big idea that identifies what learners are learning in that domain. Alternatively, use the “Big Idea Study” document to take notes of each big idea. The document includes links to the specific page for each big idea. Refer to these notes in the next unit.

Some big ideas don’t apply directly to each grade or age level. Review that domain to gain perspective about how the big ideas scaffold.

Reflection

  • What is your biggest takeaway after reading the big ideas?
  • What themes or through lines did you identify?
