Backup failure on C:\drive

Recovery services agent was unable to initialize a backup storage location due to unresponsive VDS Service.

I have already troubleshooted with Microsoft and increased limit of volume shadow copies, I have also restarted the volume shadow copy service and switches it to automatic from Manual. The C drive did not have enough space so scratch folder was switched to F drive with sufficient space. I have checked the vss list writers and they all have no errors. After all this, i restarted the server and tried backing up now. It still showed a failed status. What else do I have to do to clear this error completely

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in Q&A forum.

Backup requires some additional disk space on the client computer to create a VSS snapshot. On any volume that is not system reserved, at least 10 percent of available disk space must be free. On a system reserved volume, if the volume size is less than 500 MB, VSS requires 32 MB of free space to create a snapshot; if the volume is 500 MB or greater, VSS requires 320 MB of free space.

If the backup error still occurs even though the above requirements are met, I suggest you refer to the following link for troubleshooting:

    https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/storage-at-microsoft/diagnosing-failures-in-windows-server-backup-part-1-vss-spp/ba-p/423990

I hope the information above is helpful.

    Best regards

    Zunhui
