problem "syncing" symbol between different versions of Word

I have been working on a (currently 80,000 word) manuscript for the last two years. When I started, I was using an older version of Word (I believe it was 2016, but not positive). My computer died last winter and now I am using Office 365 ProPlus. In many places in my document I have used the ~ symbol (top left button on the keyboard). This symbol changed between the two versions of Word (it's a bit shorter and curvier now), and when I try to replace the old symbol with the newer one (I need them all to be consistent), it won't allow me to do so. I cannot delete the old symbol, I cannot make it disappear in any way. I've tried backspacing over it, deleting it (it won't even allow me to highlight it), nothing works. I can type over it, but the symbol stays put. What can I do to make these older symbols disappear? Please help, someone!

Tilde (~) should be available in most fonts, but if Word is substituting the font it may look different.

Which font did you originally make use of, when you created the document? Is the font installed on your new computer?

Is this word doc located on OneDrive or the local PC, or?

In word, what View are you using?

What language/local are you using as on my keyboard the ~ symbol is not 'top left btn on the Keybd' but is on the same Btn as # (To the rt, just above rt shift)

Hi. Pardon my ignorance, but I'm not sure which font I originally used. I am now using Times New Roman. Do you think, if I played around with different fonts, I may be able to make these disappear?

I am using a local pc. I'm not sure what you mean by "what view" I'm using. On my (American) HP keyboard, the button just under the esc key (just to the left of the number 1) has the ~ symbol.

Open the problem document in Word. Click File > Options > Advanced and then click the Font Substitution button. Word will tell you if fonts are substituted and, if so, information will be given on which fonts are being used.
