problem "syncing" symbol between different versions of Word

I have been working on a (currently 80,000 word) manuscript for the last two years. When I started, I was using an older version of Word (I believe it was 2016, but not positive). My computer died last winter and now I am using Office 365 ProPlus. In many places in my document I have used the ~ symbol (top left button on the keyboard). This symbol changed between the two versions of Word (it's a bit shorter and curvier now), and when I try to replace the old symbol with the newer one (I need them all to be consistent), it won't allow me to do so. I cannot delete the old symbol, I cannot make it disappear in any way. I've tried backspacing over it, deleting it (it won't even allow me to highlight it), nothing works. I can type over it, but the symbol stays put. What can I do to make these older symbols disappear? Please help, someone!

    Thanks.

    It says:

Missing Document Font: Noto Sans Symbols; Substituted Font: Calibri.

What do I do now? Change the Substituted Font to Times New Roman? Will that solve the problem?

You can permanently replace the missing font, but you don't have to choose the one suggested by Word. If there is another font which you prefer, choose that one instead.

A particular character may look a bit different in another font, which probably explains the differences that you see.

However, you also stated that you were unable to delete the ~ which is strange. It should behave as any other text character, regardless of font.

I tried changing substituted font to Times New Roman. I still cannot delete the symbols. I'm feeling pretty hopeless here. Any other ideas?

What happens when you try deleting the ~ character? If you select the whole text line and press Delete, will it still not be deleted?

Well, the problem was, strangely enough, it wouldn't even allow me to highlight the character. But I've found that if I keep backspacing, both over the character (which does nothing), and then beyond it, it will finally disappear. Very odd, but it works.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. Much appreciated.
