My gmail account was working. It stopped working today. I deleted the account and now I cannot add it again?

    Hi anna cummings

I'm happy to help you today.

Could you please let me know have you tried Q&A Assist suggestions? In addition, to help me narrow this down, please check the following:

1, Confirm Gmail access outside Outlook

Sign in to your Gmail account directly at https://mail.google.com (Disclaimer: This link provided to non‑Microsoft websites is for reference only. Microsoft does not control or endorse third‑party content, and we cannot guarantee the accuracy or reliability of information found on external sites.) using a web browser and confirm:

    • You can sign in successfully
    • There are no security warnings or blocked sign‑in alerts shown in your Google account

2, Verify IMAP is still enabled in Gmail

In Gmail (web) go to Settings > See all settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP and confirm IMAP access is enabled. Outlook will not be able to add the account if IMAP is disabled.

3, Test with a different Outlook environment

This helps determine whether the issue is specific to Classic Outlook on this device. Try adding the Gmail account in New Outlook for Windows or at https://outlook.live.com

4, Check whether this occurs with another email account

If possible, try adding a different email account to Classic Outlook

Please feel free to keep me updated. Thank you for your time and understanding.

For classic Outlook on Windows, this is a known issue with Gmail accounts and Google sign-in.

Use these steps to get the Gmail account working again in classic Outlook:

    1. Make sure Outlook is updated to a fixed build
      • The Gmail sign-in issues are fixed starting with Current Channel Version 2412 Build 18324.20168 and Version 2404 Build 17531.10000 (and later) for the other channels.
      • Update Office from Outlook: File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now.
    2. Retry the Gmail browser sign-in with full permissions
      • Add the Gmail account again in classic Outlook.
      • When the Google sign-in page opens in the browser, sign in to the Gmail account.
      • On the permissions page, ensure the checkbox is selected for:
        • “Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail.” under Microsoft apps & services.
      • Complete the sign-in and return to Outlook.
      • If Outlook shows an error dialog, use the Retry link to repeat the browser sign-in and again ensure that permission box is checked.
    3. If it still fails, use the manual workaround a. Remove Microsoft apps & services access in Google
      • Close Outlook.
      • Sign in to the Google account at google.com.
      • Select the profile picture > Manage your Google Account.
      • Go to Security.
      • Under Your connections to third-party apps & services, select Microsoft apps & services.
      • Under Access you've given to Microsoft apps & services, choose Remove all access, then Confirm.
      b. Remove old Google IMAP credentials from Windows Credential Manager
      • Open Credential Manager from the Windows Start menu (in some Windows versions, open it via Control Panel).
      • Select Windows Credentials.
      • Under Generic Credentials, find entries starting with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2.
      • Expand each and hover over the name to see the full value including tp_google_imap_Oauth2.
      • Remove each credential that includes tp_google_imap_Oauth2 (there are typically two per Gmail account).
      c. Add the Gmail account back in Outlook
      • Start Outlook.
      • Go to File > Add account and add the Gmail address again.
      • When prompted to sign in via browser, complete the Google sign-in and ensure the Microsoft apps & services permission for “Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail” is checked.

If the Gmail account still cannot be added and the build is older than the fixed versions, switch to a channel/build that includes the fix, update, and then repeat the steps above.
