Hi Gaye Bochi,
I understand your camera shutter appears closed and you’re trying to open it.
Based on your description and the Q&A Assist response, this is most likely a hardware privacy shutter, not something controlled by Windows settings. However, some devices also include a keyboard toggle or electronic switch, so you can try the following:
1, Check for a keyboard shortcut
- Look for a key with a camera icon (often on the top row, e.g., F8 / F10)
- Press “Fn + (camera key)” to toggle the shutter
2, Inspect the camera area closely
- Look for a very small slider near the webcam lens
- Slide it left/right until the lens is visible (no colored cover)
3, Check your device model (if unsure)
- Some laptops (Lenovo, HP, Dell, Surface) use different shutter designs
Note: Windows itself cannot open a physical shutter through software, it’s designed as a privacy feature.
If the shutter does not respond to either a slider or keyboard shortcut, your device may not have a movable shutter, or it might be stuck.
