have a Microsoft 365 subscription. My MacBook Air 2017 is running macOS Monterey 12.7.6. The installer I downloaded requires macOS 14 and cannot be installed. I need a Microsoft 365 installer compatible with macOS Monterey 12.7.6. Thanks in advance for your support.

If you are unable to upgrade your version of MacOS 12.7.6 (Monterrey) to a more up to date version.

The last version of Office that will work on MacOS 12.7.6 (Monterrey) is 16.88, that is available on the long table on this link to all the downloadable versions from the Microsoft servers.

The Microsoft 365 subscription can be used on macOS Monterey 12.7.6, but it requires installing an older Office for Mac build that still supports Monterey instead of the latest installer that targets macOS 14.

    Use these steps:

    1. Verify macOS version
      • Confirm the Mac is on macOS 12.7.6 (Monterey). Microsoft 365 apps continue to work on macOS 12 with supported builds.
    2. Install the most recent Office build that supports Monterey
      • For macOS Monterey 12.7.6, the last supported Microsoft 365 for Mac build is 16.88.
      • Download the 16.88 installer from the Office for Mac update history page: see the long version table on Update history for Office for macOS and choose the 16.88 build that matches Microsoft 365 for Mac.
      • Run the downloaded .pkg installer on the Mac.
    3. Update once after install
      • Open any Office app (for example, Word).
      • Go to Help > Check for Updates.
      • Install available updates so the suite reaches the final 16.88.x builds (for example, 16.88.1 for Outlook and PowerPoint), which are the last updates for Monterey.
    4. Activate with the existing Microsoft 365 subscription
      • After installation, sign in with the Microsoft account that has the Microsoft 365 subscription when prompted.
      • If activation prompts persist, follow the activation troubleshooting steps in the Office for Mac article (for example, resetting license files if needed).
    5. Be aware of future support limits
      • Microsoft 365 apps require at least macOS 12 (Monterey) and a minimum app version (for macOS, 16.83 or later) to function correctly after July 13, 2026.
      • Since Monterey is already the minimum supported macOS version, plan for future hardware/OS upgrades when possible.

If the Mac cannot be upgraded beyond Monterey and newer builds eventually require macOS 13 or later, continue using the 16.88 build and, if necessary, use Microsoft 365 for the web as a fallback via a supported browser.
