    Hi Doctor Core,

Since Personal Vault works on your other devices, this usually points to an issue specific to this Windows PC rather than your Microsoft account.

With error 0x8004de44, one known cause is when the connection goes through an authenticated proxy. In simple terms, OneDrive (including Personal Vault) does not handle proxy servers that require a username and password. This can also occur on some corporate or filtered networks, or while a VPN is enabled.

Please try the following steps in order:

    1. Check proxy and VPN

    • Go to Settings > Network & internet > Proxy
    • Turn off Manual proxy setup and remove any proxy that requires sign‑in
    • Disconnect any VPN, then try opening Personal Vault again

    2. Check OneDrive on the web (on the same PC)

    • Sign in at OneDrive.com in your browser
    • If the website works but Personal Vault does not, this usually indicates a local app or sign‑in state issue

    3. Restart the PC

    • This can clear stuck authentication sessions

    4. Reset OneDrive

    • Press Windows + R and run: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
    • If OneDrive does not restart automatically, run: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe

This does not delete cloud files, but a resync may occur

    5. Clear saved Microsoft credentials

    • Open Credential Manager and remove any entries under Windows Credentials or Web Credentials that reference your Microsoft account or OneDrive

    6. Unlink OneDrive and sign in again

    • OneDrive icon > Help & Settings > Settings > Account > Unlink this PC
    • Then sign in again

    7. Reset the Windows Settings app

    • Open Start, type Settings, then select App settings (do not open the app) > Select Reset, then restart the PC
    • This can clear account state conflicts associated with this error

If it still does not work:

    • Reinstall OneDrive
    • Check for Windows, Microsoft Store, and OneDrive updates

If the issue continues, please share:

    • The exact last line of the error message (in quotes)
    • Whether Proxy or VPN is enabled
    • Whether OneDrive on the web works on this same PC

Please let me know if this proves useful to you, or if you would like further assistance.

I'm looking forward to your reply.

Error code 0x8004de44 when signing in indicates that the connection is going through an authenticated proxy, which OneDrive (including Personal Vault) does not support.

To fix this on the Windows PC where sign-in fails:

    1. Ensure the PC is not using an authenticated proxy:
      • Check Windows proxy settings and remove any proxy that requires authentication.
      • If on a corporate network, contact the network admin to confirm that OneDrive traffic is not forced through an authenticated proxy.
    2. Reset the Windows Settings app account state and reinstall OneDrive (workaround used for 0x8004de44/0x80048823):
      1. Select Start and type Settings, but do not open the Settings app.
      2. In the pane that appears for Settings, select App settings.
      3. In the Reset section, select Reset.
      4. Reinstall the OneDrive app on the PC.
      5. Sign in again and then try accessing Personal Vault.

If Personal Vault still does not open, verify that Personal Vault works in OneDrive on the web and on your other devices, then try signing out of OneDrive on the affected PC and signing back in after confirming no authenticated proxy is in use.
