Word no longer maintains table shading when adding rows or columns to an existing table.

Make sure that you install the most recent updates. For the so-called current channel, that means version 2603.

Since you have posted in the "for business" category, I guess you have an organization/business version, meaning that you may not have full control over which updates are installed. Therefore you may not have the most recent update yet.

All of my tables are set up as templates and there are hundreds of them. It would take ages to reformat all of them. I had this issue previously but am unable to locate that thread.

Sorry, but there is no simple way to automatically "repair" the incorrect formatting.

A macro might be a possibility to restore the correct formatting, but only if you can describe exactly which formatting you want to (re-)apply to your tables.

    Dear @Anne Osterholz,

I understand how frustrating it is when table formatting doesn't automatically apply to new rows or columns. This typically occurs because the shading was applied as a manual format override rather than being defined within the Table Style.

To fix this and ensure consistent formatting, please follow these steps:

Option 1: Apply Formatting via Table Style Options

Instead of using the "Shading" bucket tool on specific cells, use the built-in style engine:

    1. Click inside your table to reveal the Table Design tab.
    2. In the Table Style Options group (left side), ensure Banded Rows or Banded Columns is checked.
    3. New rows will now automatically inherit the alternating shading pattern.  User's image

Option 2: Modify the Table Style

If you are using a custom color scheme, you must bake the shading into the style itself:

    1. Right-click the table style you are using in the Table Styles gallery and select Modify Table Style.
    2. In the "Apply formatting to" dropdown, select Header row, Odd numbered rows, or even numbered rows.
    3. Choose your desired background color.  User's image
    4. Select the radio button new documents based on this template at the bottom if you want this to persist in future files.
    5. Click OK.  User's image

    Option 3: Clear Manual Formatting

If the steps above don't work, existing manual formatting might be "blocking" the style.

    1. Highlight the entire table.
    2. Go to the Home tab and click Clear All Formatting, then re-apply your desired Table Style.

For more detailed information on managing these settings, you can refer to the official Format a table - Microsoft Support

I hope this helps resolve the issue immediately. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
