Copilot Limitations

Microsoft:

We are the Genealogy Team for the William Bull and Sarah Wells Stone House Association, in Hamptonburgh, New York. We are currently involved with a digital platform Catalogit where we scan historical documents and then need a thorough transcription to attach to the document being uploaded to Catalogit.

We have an Office 365 subscription and it seems that there is a daily limitation for using Copilot to transcribe or summarize the documents being uploaded. We would like to suggest that this limitation be lifted for subscribers to Office 365.

We understand about "usage fairness" but we need an application that we can use 50-100 times per day or session. With your limitation this forces us to use other AI products. For instance we have an Google account where this limitation does not exist.

Please re-consider your mandatory daily limitation for Copilot. We are then forced with the alternative of using Google Gemini exclusively.

Thank you.

Johnny Mike

Microsoft 365 Copilot and related AI features have built-in usage limits and AI credits to ensure fair access and performance for all users. These limits are by design and vary by:

    • Subscription plan (for example, Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium)
    • Specific feature (for example, transcription, Actions, Vision, Voice, or Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps)
    • Timeframe (per day or per month)

For consumer plans (Personal, Family, Premium):

    • AI usage is governed by both feature limits and AI credits. Each AI action (such as generating text, summarizing, or editing content) consumes credits.
    • Feature limits cap how many times a specific AI feature can be used in a given period, and these limits may differ per feature and plan.
    • Limits and credits can change over time as new AI models and features are introduced.

    For Microsoft 365 Premium specifically:

    • Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps and image generation/editing have extensive usage beyond standard credit limits.
    • Other features (such as Actions, Vision, and Voice) still have explicit caps (for example, tasks per month or minutes per day).

In addition, some Copilot-related limits (such as increased transcription quotas for Copilot-licensed users) may be rolled out gradually and might not yet be active for every account. In such cases, Microsoft guidance is to wait for rollout completion or contact Microsoft support so engineering can review the specific tenant or account.

    To manage and review limits:

    1. Open the Microsoft account portal and go to Services & subscriptions.
    2. Review the current AI credits and feature limits associated with the subscription.
    3. If limits appear inconsistent with the documented entitlements (for example, expected higher quotas with a Copilot license), open a support case through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center (for organizational tenants) so support can investigate.

If current limits do not meet the required volume of daily transcriptions, options within the documented scope are:

    • Consider Microsoft 365 Premium, which offers the highest Copilot usage limits among the listed home plans.
    • Monitor documentation and Admin Center messages for updates, as Microsoft may adjust limits over time.
    • Work with Microsoft support to confirm that the tenant is receiving the correct Copilot-related quotas where applicable.

The limits themselves are not configurable by customers and cannot be lifted or disabled on a per-tenant basis according to the provided documentation.
