To unlock a BitLocker-protected device, the 48‑digit BitLocker recovery key is required. If this key can’t be found, the data on the drive cannot be decrypted or accessed.

Try each of these locations to find the recovery key:

1. Microsoft account (home use)
   • On another device, sign in with the same Microsoft account used on the locked PC and check for saved keys as described in Find your BitLocker recovery key.
2. Work or school account
   • If the device was ever joined to an organization (work/school), the key may be stored in that tenant:
   • From another device, go to https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey.
   • Sign in with the work or school account.
   • Go to Devices → select the device → View BitLocker Keys and match the Key ID shown on the blue BitLocker screen.
3. Printout or paper copy
   • Check any printed documents saved when BitLocker was first turned on; the printout contains the Key ID and the 48‑digit recovery key.
4. USB flash drive
   • If the key was saved to a USB drive, connect it to another PC and look for a text file containing the recovery key.

If the recovery key cannot be found in any of these locations and the device is not managed by an organization that can provide it, BitLocker protection cannot be bypassed. The only remaining option is to reset or clean‑install Windows on the device, which will remove all existing files on the encrypted drive.

For a managed (work/school) device, contact the organization’s IT/helpdesk; they can often retrieve the key from Microsoft Entra ID, Active Directory, or a BitLocker self-service/helpdesk portal.
