Visual Studio setup closes. [SOLVED]

After uninstalling Visual studio, I tried to install it again. But after I open the Visual Studio setup, this screen appears and then closes. how do I fix it, I've already tried opening it with "Run as administrator".

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Please first try to reboot your machine, download a new VS setup file and put it in the root directory of the C drive for example C:\VSSetup.exe and then run it.

If everything includes VS worked well, before you uninstalled it, then this issue may be related to remained cache/files of VS. If there was an error before you uninstalled VS, then this issue may be related to this error.

Please check following folders/Registry keys(remember to back up the Registry keys before removing them) and make sure that they have been removed or renamed before you try to install VS.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio

%programdata%\Microsoft\visualstudio\packages

%Temp%(I suggest just renaming this folder, instead of removing it. You may need to reboot your machine before renaming it)

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\1X.0_XXXXXXXX

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\VisualStudio\Setup

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\Setup

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\VisualStudio\Setup

If you changed anything like environment variables, Windows Registry keys or removed any files, please try to recover them.

In case it’s related to the error which you got before uninstalling VS, please try following:

Open CMD as administrator, run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth command, wait for it finishes running, run sfc /scannow command to fix any corrupted system files.

Try to download and follow the wizard program to install and use the troubleshooter tool.

Update Windows OS.

Disable antivirus, extensions or proxy temporarily and test again.

May I know the reason that you uninstalled VS? Did you get any error before you tried to uninstall VS? If so, could you share us the error message that you got?

I uninstalled VS Code because I wanted to transfer all the VS files from the C:/ disk to the D:/ disk.

No problem.

Visual Studio Code(VS Code) is different from Visual Studio(VS), so uninstalling VS Code shouldn’t cause this issue.

Did you manually remove or transfer some files/folders?

Are you using different/multiple accounts on this machine?

Does C drive have enough free space(BTW, Visual Studio cannot be completely installed on another drive, see Install everything of VS on another drive)?

Yes, I have only 10 Gigabytes left on the C: drive. That’s why I decided to transfer all files to the D: drive.

Except the files/folders/Registry keys that I mentioned in my answer, did you delete other files/folders/Registry keys? I am thinking whether you deleted the needed files/folders/Registry keys.

Please try to download and run this collect.exe tool, navigate to %Temp% folder and find the file called vslogs.zip. Extract the files, open the subfolder(Temp) of vslogs folder and check the files start with dd_bootstrapper, dd_installer and dd_setup.

Let us know if you see any recorded detailed error message(You can sort these files by date and check from the latest one).

I'm not sure which deleted files you were talking about, I was only deleting the ones you told me to delete to fix errors with the VS installation. Can I clarify, should I send all the files in the VSlogs.zip folder or just the files with the beginning of dd? Please also check following Registry key and make sure that it has been set to DWord and 1(remember to back up the Registry before modifying it).

Yes, deleting the files which I mentioned above is correct. If you deleted other files/Registry keys which I didn’t mention, please let me know.

I shared the method at the very beginning about uninstalling VS completely and then reinstalling it manually, if you can confirm you deleted all those files and Registries but the same issue persists, then probably the issue hides in your system environment.

If you remember anything special that you deleted, set or modified(except the files and Registry files that I mentioned), please let me know.

Besides, no need to send the whole vslogs.zip folder. If you see any error message in those log files start with dd_, please share us the error message to check.

I have not heard from you for a couple of days. May I know if you can successfully install VS now?

I am thinking if you try to put the setup file into other driver, for example D drive and install it, will it work?

If you check Windows Settings > Windows Update > Update history, is there any Windows Update error recorded?

hi friend , I had this problem too

I think that Visual Studio was not removed correctly or completely

to fix this issue

Press Win + R and type %temp%

Delete all the files and folders within the Temp folder.

and try installation again!
