Microsoft Remote Desktop App error 0x50331765 when connecting to Azure Virtual Desktop Workspace

I am setting up an Azure Virtual Desktop infrastructure. I have set up a "personal" Windows 11 desktop. I subscribe to the workspace in the Microsoft Remote Desktop App (msrdcw.exe). When I try and connect to the virtual machine, I get the error code 0x50331765 with no further information. Searching the web results in no hits on the error code.

Does anyone have any information on this error?

I don't see anything specific to error code 0x50331765 either, so I've reached out to the Azure Virtual Desktop team to see if they have any additional insights. We may need additional information so I'm going to include the general troubleshooting guide below. If anything looks like it may apply, that will help in isolating the cause.

One note - I can connect using the ip address with the Remote Desktop Client (mstsc.exe)

I have some recommendations from the Azure Virtual Desktop group which should help:

Use either the MSRDC application or the Windows app (as msrdcw.exe does not receive updates)

Avoid using a public IP on the VM. By default, no AVD session host gets a public IP due to security risks.

Thanks for the info. I had added the public IP address for testing and have removed it since I know it is not needed :-).

I tried MSRDC and Windows APP and am getting slightly different results. I am getting "Your credentials did not work"

I followed the instructions in this article https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-desktop/set-up-mfa?tabs=avd to set up conditional access for our MFA, but it made no difference.

Have you enabled SSO for Entra ID?

Is the account synced from your AD?

Did you set up the Kerberos server object if you use SSO?

We are not using SSO.

The account is synced from our on-prem AD.

What causes a 0x50331765 error when connecting to Azure Virtual Desktop Workspace?

Unfortunately, client side error codes usually don't provide much regarding the cause of the error when looking at service issues. Useful information for this scenario includes:

Screenshots

Are you able to connect via web client?

Is the VM Entra joined or hybrid joined?

Is this a synced user or a cloud only user?

Are you using the latest MSRDC version?

What error was logged in AVD insights?

Can you connect from a different device?

Do you use VPN software?

Do you have an ActivityID?

Do you have RDClientAutoTrace files?

In this instance we are taking a closer look at the resources in question and I've reached out directly for additional information.
