Why VM traffic is enrouted through the US?

Hi, I'm new to Azure.
I'm trying to deploy a latency-sensitive service on a VM located in the Spain Central region. I've noticed that when I run a traceroute from Spain to Italy, the traffic first goes to the US and then to Italy, instead of staying within Europe. Is there any way to solve this issue? This routing problem could affect my measurements.

2024-07-12T11:55:40.36+00:00 A clearer example can be seen in the following image, where a traceroute from Madrid (Spain) to Portugal follows this route: Spain - US - UK - Portugal. As you can see, I'm not benefiting from placing the VM in Spain in terms of latency.

Can you please elaborate more on your set-up here on how you are testing the latency? A rough network diagram will be helpful. This is the recommended guide to test latency between two azure regions.
Meanwhile it will also help if you could check on what is routing preference set for the public IP address.

I'm currently testing latency between an Azure VM (located in Spain) and diferent RIPE Anchors (https://atlas.ripe.net/anchors/list) distributed through Europe. I've tried to set my public IP address to Internet routing preference instead of Microsoft Network, but the results are similar. This are the resources I'm currently using and the network prefernce of my public IP:
Whenever I try to to test my latency to any of those RIPE Anchors, all my traffic is routed through the US, affecting my measurements. I would like to benefit from having my VM located in Spain but it isn't the case.
