    Hi john macco,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. I know how frustrating it is when you can’t open your own Documents folder or read data CDs, especially after you’ve already tried several fixes.

To help us avoid repeating steps you may already have tried, could you let me know what you’ve already done so far to troubleshoot this?

In the meantime, let’s take this one step at a time to find out exactly what’s blocking access:

Step 1: Check the Documents folder permissions

First, let’s make sure the basics look right.

    • Open File Explorer
    • Go to C:\Users\your‑username
    • Right‑click Documents and choose Properties
    • Open the Security tab
    • Click your username in the list

You should see Read & execute and Read set to Allow. This gives us a quick snapshot of how the permissions are configured at a glance.

Step 2: Check what Windows actually allows

Sometimes permissions appear fine, but Windows is still blocking access behind the scenes.

    • In the same Security tab, click Advanced
    • Open Effective Access
    • Click Select a user
    • Type your Windows username, click Check Names, then OK
    • Click View effective access

If this shows access as denied, that would explain why you’re running into issues even though everything looks allowed.

Step 3: Check who owns the Documents folder

While you’re still in Advanced Security Settings, take a look at the Owner at the top.

If the owner isn’t your account (for example, if it shows SYSTEM), Windows may restrict access even if you’re an administrator. Ownership can matter more than it seems in cases like this.

Step 4: Check access to the data CD

Next, let’s confirm how Windows is handling the CD itself.

    • Insert the data CD
    • Open File Explorer
    • Right‑click the CD/DVD drive and choose Properties
    • Open the Security tab

If the Security tab is missing or access is denied, that usually points to Windows blocking the CD at a system level. Since CDs are read‑only, their permissions can’t be changed directly.

Please keep me posted on how it goes and feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance. I'm here to help.

It seems you are experiencing issues accessing data CDs and your Documents folder. Here are some potential troubleshooting steps you can consider:

    1. Check Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to access the Documents folder. Sometimes, security permissions can prevent access to certain files or folders.
    2. Folder Redirection Issues: If your Documents folder is redirected (for example, to a network location), there may be issues with the redirection settings. You can check the Group Policy settings related to folder redirection to ensure they are configured correctly.
    3. Windows Explorer Issues: If you are having problems specifically with Windows Explorer, consider restarting it or logging off and then back on to refresh the session. This can help if there are temporary glitches affecting access.
    4. Check for Corruption: If the data CDs are not accessible, ensure they are not damaged or corrupted. Try accessing them on another computer to rule out hardware issues.
    5. System Updates: Make sure your system is up to date, as updates can fix bugs that may be causing these issues.

If these steps do not resolve the problem, you may want to consider reaching out to Microsoft support again for further assistance.
