Hello, I am currently an active student, but after a recent update, my Word app became view-only and says that I need to use a different account to edit documents. I am logged with my school account, and I would like to check whether my Microsoft 365 Education license is still active or if there is an activation issue on my Mac

Could you please help me reactivate Office

    Hi @Kristopher Escobar

I hope you’re doing well today.

From your description, after the recent update, Word on your Mac switched to view only and is prompting you to use a different account to edit, even though you are signed in with your school account.

This typically occurs when an update refreshes Office activation on macOS and the stored sign in or license token no longer matches the account that holds the Education entitlement. Since Microsoft 365 Education licenses are entirely managed and assigned at the institutional level, any disruption in activation following an update is something that requires attention from your school's side rather than from Microsoft directly. Furthermore, factors such as license renewal cycles or administrative policy changes within your institution can also contribute to this kind of interruption.

With that in mind, I would like to walk you through a few steps that may help restore access to your Office applications.

    • First, we recommend signing out of your school account within Microsoft Word and then signing back in by selecting Work or School Account when prompted, as this ensures the application reconnects properly to your Education license.
    • Second, if signing back in does not restore full access, please visit the Microsoft Account Services page at account.microsoft.com/services using your school email to verify whether your Microsoft 365 Education subscription is still listed as active.
    • Third, should the above steps not bring a change, I encourage you to clear your Office credentials through your Mac's Keychain Access by searching for any Microsoft Office entries and removing them, then restarting Word and signing in again with your school account.

In the event that none of these steps restore editing access, I sincerely recommend contacting your school's IT Administrator or Help Desk team, as they hold the necessary permissions to verify your license status, reassign access, and fully reactivate Office on your behalf. Assign or unassign licenses for users in the Microsoft 365 admin center - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

Perform these checks and actions on the Mac to reactivate Office with the school account:

    1. Confirm the license is still assigned (admin or school IT may need to do this)
      • In the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, go to Users > Active users.
      • Select the student account.
      • In Licenses and Apps, expand Licenses and make sure a Microsoft 365 Education (or equivalent) license that includes Office desktop apps is checked.
      • If it is already checked, uncheck it, select Save changes, then check it again and Save changes once more. This refreshes the assignment.
    2. Sign out of Office and sign back in with the school account
      • Open Word on the Mac.
      • Select the name/profile icon at the top and choose Sign out.
      • Close Word, then reopen it.
      • Select Sign in and use the school (work or school) account, not a personal Microsoft account.
      • After sign-in, verify activation and try editing a document.
    3. Clear old license information (if the issue persists)
      • Run the Mac license removal tool as described in How to remove Office license files on a Mac.
      • After removing license files, open Word again and sign in with the school account to reactivate.
    4. If activation still fails
      • Follow the guidance in Activate Office for Mac and Reactivate Microsoft 365 or Office for additional activation troubleshooting.
      • If the product shows as unlicensed or “products can’t be used to activate,” ensure the subscription is active and that the correct work or school account is used, as described in the unlicensed/activation error guidance.
      • If problems continue, contact the school’s Microsoft 365 admin or IT helpdesk so they can verify the Education subscription status and license assignment.
