I changed my son's XBOX settings to allow him to play multiplayer games on Minecraft Java Edition on his laptop but the join multiplayer button is still blocked. The error message says check you Microsoft Account Settings.

On child and family accounts, Xbox privacy and multiplayer settings can take time to propagate and can also be overridden by family settings or by how the account is set up in the Microsoft family.

Use these steps to resolve the blocked “Join Multiplayer” button for Minecraft Java Edition on a laptop:

    1. Confirm the correct account and platform
      • Make sure the child is signing into Minecraft Java with the same Microsoft account whose Xbox settings were changed.
      • Ensure the game edition matches what others are using (Java vs Bedrock). If trying to join a Java Realm or server from Bedrock (or vice versa), it will not work.
    2. Verify Xbox privacy & online safety settings for the child
      • Sign in as the organizer/parent at the Xbox privacy settings page (for PC users, use https://aka.ms/XboxPrivSettings as given in the docs).
      • Select the child’s profile.
      • Under Xbox and Windows 10 devices Online Safety, set at least:
        • You can join multiplayer gamesAllow
        • You can join cross-network playAllow (if playing with others on different platforms)
        • You can add friends and follow othersAllow (if needed for Realms/friends)
      • Under Privacy, ensure options that affect communication and friends (like Others can communicate with voice, text or invites) are set appropriately if communication is needed.
    3. Check Microsoft family configuration
      • If the child is in a Microsoft family, only the organizer who originally granted consent can manage some permissions.
      • If multiplayer remains blocked even though settings show Allow, add the account back into a family (if removed), or into a new family where an organizer can:
        • Open the child’s Xbox and Windows 10 devices Online Safety settings.
        • Explicitly set all relevant items (including You can join multiplayer games) to Allow.
      • Leave the family later if desired; the updated permissions remain in effect.
    4. Allow time for settings to propagate
      • Changes to You can join multiplayer games and related settings may take several hours to fully apply across services.
      • In one documented case, it took over 24 hours before the child account could play multiplayer after the organizer changed the setting to Allow.
    5. Refresh the child’s session on the laptop
      • Sign out of Minecraft and any Xbox/Microsoft apps on the laptop.
      • Restart the laptop.
      • Sign back into the Xbox app (if used) and Minecraft Java with the child’s Microsoft account.
      • Check if the Join Multiplayer button is now enabled.

If, after confirming the correct account, verifying all the above settings, and waiting for propagation (up to 24 hours), the button is still blocked, repeat the family steps: add the account to a family, set all Xbox online safety options to Allow, then sign out/in and restart the device.
