How to fix Visual Studio 2022 from crashing on startup?

I downloaded Visual Studio 2022 yesterday and installed the .NET component for a uni course. Today when I went to open VS2022 it crashed on start-up. I have repaired the program and it worked well once, then after I had saved/closed the program it began crashing any time I tried to reopen it. I have also tried restarting my pc, reinstalling Visual Studio, and running the application as admin. I have 20GB of storage left so I don't think its a problem with that. My laptop is running a Core i5-10200H, 8GB RAM, and a GTX 1650 on Windows 11 Home.

Hello @William.S,

Did you install any third-party extensions? If so, does disabling them or uninstalling them work?

Does this issue appear on a newly installed VS(when you launch it the first time, with a simple Console application)?

Do you have full permissions on your machine(check group policy, antivirus and security management software…)?

Please open Developer Command Prompt for Visual Studio 2022(from Windows Search box), run devenv /log. Reproduce this issue, check the generated ActivityLog.xml file in %AppData%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\17.0_<UniqueID> folder. If you found any error code/message please share them here for further check.

I have not installed any 3rd party extensions. When I repair / Reinstall VS, it works well on the first boot and then crashes on any further uses. My laptop that I am using is my own and so I do have full permissions. I ran the 'devenv /log' command and found multiple 'Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF)' errors. One such error was: "Still unable to load MEF component DLL: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.UpgradeAssistant, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified."

Thank you, removing the "ComponentModelCache" folder and then restarting VS seems to have fixed the issue.

Also, sometimes cache would raise this kind of causes. please try clearing out the component cache for VS? Close all VS instances, go to directory %localappdata%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\16._xxxx\ComponentModelCache and delete all the files underneath.

Hi @William.S,

Please try to rename/remove this "ComponentModelCache" folder C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\17.0_<InstanceID>\ComponentModelCache, restart VS and check if it works.
