Hello! When I logged into my laptop this morning, the Planner Task App had updated, and all my comments are gone. Every single vital comment I've made about progress on my tasks is gone. Please tell me there is a way to get them back?

    Hi @Krista Croy,

Good day and thank you for taking the time to share the details of your situation. It is completely understandable how concerning this experience would be, especially when those comments are important for tracking task progress.

Based on my research, what you are seeing appears to be related to a recent Microsoft Planner update (Message ID MC1193421), where Microsoft introduced a new “Task chat” experience to replace the previous task comments feature.

For reference: Message center - Microsoft 365 admin center.

Note: Access is limited to Microsoft 365 Global Administrator. Please contact your IT admin if you don’t have access.

With this change, the traditional comments section is no longer shown directly within the task and instead can be accessed via Outlook.

With this in mind, you may try opening the affected task and checking for any link that directs to Outlook, where the comments can be viewed.

In case the comments cannot be located in Outlook either, the most appropriate next step would be to contact your IT administrator, who can raise a support request with Microsoft to further investigate. A technical support engineer can then initiate a remote session, review backend settings, and run diagnostics. If needed, they can escalate the case to specialized engineering teams who are well-equipped to perform advanced troubleshooting and provide targeted solutions.

As moderators, our primary goal is to provide helpful guidance and support through general troubleshooting steps. While we don’t have access to internal systems or administrative tools required to resolve account-specific or backend issues, we truly appreciate your understanding of these limitations. We genuinely hope the information we share helps point you in the right direction, and we're always here to assist as much as we can within our scope.

For guidance on how to request support in the admin center, please share the following resource with your admin: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin.

Planner task comments can disappear or stop showing for several known reasons, but the underlying comments are typically still stored with the plan rather than permanently deleted.

For Basic plans in Planner, check the following:

    1. Comments pasted from email
      • If comments were added by pasting email content that included “From:” and “Sent:” fields, everything from those fields onward will not appear when the task is reopened.
      • For future comments:
        • Remove the “From:” and “Sent:” lines before selecting Send for short emails.
        • For long emails, attach the email to the task and refer to it in the comments instead.
    2. Exchange Online requirement
      • If the account or organization is no longer using Exchange Online (for example, after a tenant or mailbox change), commenting on tasks may stop working and existing comments may not show correctly.
    3. Connected Yammer Groups
      • Comments cannot be added to Planner tasks in plans created by Connected Yammer Groups. If the plan was moved or re-created in such a group, comments may not be available.
    4. Forked comment threads
      • If the comment thread for a task has been “forked” (for example, someone replied directly to the group email in Outlook instead of commenting in Planner, or there are more than 100 comments on a task), not all comments will load in Planner.
      • In this case, open the plan’s Microsoft 365 Group conversation in Outlook (More options (…) next to the plan name → Conversation) to see if the comments are visible there.

If none of these apply and all comments across tasks appear missing immediately after an app update, raise a support ticket via the Microsoft 365 admin center so support can check for a service issue or regression affecting Planner comments in the updated app.
