student subscription

2026-05-27T21:48:39.5733333+00:00

I'm a student and my student subscription has expired, even though I'm still a student. I want to renew it to use my Microsoft Office programs because they've stopped working.

Good day @Mustafa Mahmoud Mustafa Ali Raslan, and I appreciate the clear explanation of your concern.

Just to gently clarify before we go any further, this is a user‑to‑user support forum. I don’t have the ability to access or investigate individual accounts because this is a user-to-user support forum. Moderators and contributors, including external Microsoft employees, do not have access to internal systems or the ability to directly take action on Microsoft product features. However, I truly hope I can help review your situation, offer some guidance, and support you in finding the right next steps as best as possible.

Please note that student subscriptions are managed by your school’s IT administrator. Because of this, renewal cannot be done directly by end users. I recommend contacting your school’s IT administrator to review the subscription. In case you do not know who is your IT admin, kindly refer to this article: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

You can share the following information with them so they can verify your subscription:

Go to Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Navigate to Users, then Active users > Select your account.

Check Licenses and apps to confirm a license is assigned > Save changes.

    User's image

Please ask them to check the subscription status:

Go to Billing, then Your products > Locate the subscription > Renew if needed.

    User's image

After the renewal, please ask them to remove the license from your account, assign it again, and allow up to one hour for the changes to take effect.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have any questions or need further support, please don’t hesitate to reach out at any time.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Since the subscription has expired, the Office apps stop working until the subscription is renewed and activation is refreshed.

For a student subscription provided by a school, the school’s IT or Microsoft 365 admin controls license assignment and renewal. The following steps are needed:

    1. Confirm the subscription status
      • Go to the Subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the same school account that is used for Office.
      • Check whether a Microsoft 365 subscription is listed as active or expired/suspended.
      • If it shows as expired or no subscription appears, the school has likely removed or not renewed the license.
    2. Contact the school’s IT/administrator
      • Explain that the Microsoft 365 education subscription has expired even though enrollment is still active.
      • Ask them to:
        • Verify that the Microsoft 365 Apps license is still assigned to the account.
        • Reactivate or reassign the license if needed.
      • Only a Microsoft 365 admin at the institution can reactivate or reassign a student license.
    3. After the school reactivates the license
      • Close all Office apps.
      • Reopen an app (for example Word) and sign in with the school account if prompted.
      • If a subscription warning still appears, go to File → Account in an Office app and use the option to update or switch the license, then sign in again with the active school account.
    4. If the school no longer provides Office
      • If the institution has stopped providing Microsoft 365, a personal subscription is required to keep using the desktop apps. In that case, purchase and activate a Microsoft 365 Personal/Family subscription, then sign in with that personal account in Office.

If the subscription is a personal Microsoft 365 plan (not through school), renew it directly:

    1. Renew the subscription
    2. Verify the renewal and clear the warning
      • After payment, go again to the Subscriptions page and confirm the subscription shows as active and the new renewal/expiry date.
      • Close all Office apps and reopen them. Sign in with the same account used to renew. The apps should resume full functionality.

If activation errors continue after renewal, run through the activation troubleshooting steps in the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter referenced in the context.
