Hello I had a user name change and once completed, everything updated except the onmicrosoft.com email that is showing in alias in the azure active directory. She seems to be able to receive and send emails so Im not sure whats happening. From my understanding this is the microsoft created account. Is there a way to update this or should I have just created a totally new account?

Thanks for any assistance and insight.

    Hi Charlie B!

Thank you for feedback and appologies

To update the username in the email alias, you can follow these steps:

    1. Refresh or clear the email alias cache: a. Sign in to the Azure portal . b. Navigate to Azure Active Directory. c. In the left-hand menu, select "Users" and then select the affected user account. d. Under the "Account" section, click on "Manage email aliases." e. Remove the onmicrosoft.com email alias, save the changes, and then re-add it with the updated username. f. Save the changes again and check if the updated alias is reflected correctly.

Also, It's possible that the update to the onmicrosoft.com email alias may still be in progress. I recommend waiting for a few hours or even up to 24 hours to see if the alias updates automatically.

    Best Regards, Shakiru

Thanks for the response Shakiru. IF I understand your response, for clarity I don't want to add a domain but update the alias username in the email "username"@company.onmicrosoft.com. the instructions sent seem to talk about adding a new domain. Maybe Im missing something. thanks for any additional assistance.

Also, to confirm she seems to be able to get and receive email ok. Was wondering if there was a way to update "username"@company.onmicrosoft.com.

    thanks,

    Charlie.

    Hi Charlie B!

If a user's name has been changed, but the associated onmicrosoft.com email address is still showing as an alias in Azure Active Directory, there are a couple of possible scenarios to consider:

Alias Display: The onmicrosoft.com email address may continue to appear as an alias even after a name change. This is a common occurrence and does not necessarily indicate an issue. As long as the user is able to send and receive emails successfully using their new email address, there is typically no need to be concerned.

However, you can add a new onmicrosoft.com domain

    Check here for detail: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/admin/setup/add-or-replace-your-onmicrosoftcom-domain?view=o365-worldwide

    Best Regards, Shakiru
