How to exclude specific users from inbound connector

Hi there,

I have two connectors in Exchange an inbound and an outbound and want to configure a rule in the mailflow rule to filter out specific users. How would I set this up in Exchange? I don't see the option to filter out specific users in the connector itself but I can create a rule or could I use this: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/mail-flow-best-practices/use-connectors-to-configure-mail-flow/enhanced-filtering-for-connectors#configure-enhanced-filtering-for-connectors

Regards,

Shaun

Block is one of several options given as an example in my hypothetical case above, redirecting to another service is a good idea as well.

    Hello

Why would I want to block message and not redirect message to the connector? and then add a rule to say 'except if...' this user for example.

I asked the 3rd party support how we can achieve this and this is what they came back with.

    1. Connector Configuration in Microsoft 365's Exchange Admin Center (EAC):

    1. Inbound Connector: To allow incoming messages for designated users to avoid processing, implement an additional mail flow rule or connector to route these messages before they reach the connector.
    2. Outbound Connector: For outbound messages, modify the connectors to ensure that emails from the specified users do not traverse through the connector.

    2. Mail Flow (Transport) Rules in EAC:

    1. Utilize the EAC's mail flow rule functionality. Create conditions contingent on the sender or recipient, and subsequently delineate actions for emails that fulfill these conditions. For instance, a rule can be set up to redirect emails from user@example.com to another service, bypassing the connector.

    Regards

    Shaun

Hello Shaun S, my name is Jeremy, thank you for reaching out today.

I can certainly help you with the steps necessary to set up the mailflow rule.

    Here is how:

    1. Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center, navigate to the Exchange admin center (EAC).
    2. In the EAC, go to "Mail flow" > "Rules" and click the "plus (+)" icon to create a new rule.
    3. Give your rule a descriptive name like "Exclude Specific Users from Inbound Connector."
    4. In the "Apply this rule if..." section, set the conditions to match the messages received from the inbound connector.

You can select conditions based on recipient, sender, or other message attributes.

For this scenario, you want to filter out messages from specific users, so you will choose the condition that identifies the sender.

For example, to exclude messages from a specific user with the email address "*****************," select "The sender is located..." > "Outside the organization" and "The sender address matches..." > "*****************."

    1. If you want to exclude multiple specific users, you can add additional conditions using the "Add Exception" option. This allows you to exclude multiple users or groups from the rule.
    2. In the "Do the following..." section, you can define the action to be taken on the messages that match the conditions.

For this case, select "Block the message..." from the list of actions.

    1. Click "Save" to save the rule.

The rule will now be active and will filter out messages from the specified users when they are received via the inbound connector.

    Regards,
