How to update onmicrosoft.com domain name with typo created at registration

Hi, I recently signed up for the Microsoft Non-Profit Offer for M365. When I signed up I accidently typed in our domain name incorrectly as xxxxthreatre.onmicrosoft.com rather than xxxxtheatre.onmicrosoft.com. I am really hoping to be able to correct the spelling of theatre in our domain name. I would rather not have to pay for a domain name as we are learning how to use M365 for our non-profit mission.

Appreciate any assistance.

Ronda

Hi Ronda Southall

Greetings!

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community!

Based on your description, I understand you accidently typed your domain name incorrectly and hope to be able to correct the spelling.

Once the onmicrosoft.com domain is added, it cannot be removed. Thus, in this case, you may have to add an additional onmicrosoft.com domain and then change your fallback domain in the Microsoft 365 admin center with your global admin account. (If you are not sure who is your admin, can refer this How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support)

Also please note you are limited a total of five onmicrosoft.com domains in your Microsoft 365 environment.

Before changing your fallback domain to a new onmicrosoft.com domain, you may want to consider changing your onmicrosoft.com SharePoint domain through the PowerShell steps provided in SharePoint domain rename preview because creating an additional onmicrosoft domain and using it as your fallback domain will not do a rename for SharePoint Online.

Then you may follow below steps to change your fallback domain:

  1. In the Microsoft 365 admin center, select Settings, and then select (or go directly to) Domains.
  2. Select your onmicrosoft.com default domain.
  3. Select Add onmicrosoft domain.
  4. In the Add onmicrosoft domain page, in the Domain name box, type the correct name for your new onmicrosoft.com domain.
  5. Select Add domain. When successfully added, you will see a message stating this.
  6. Then in the Domains page, select the new onmicrosoft.com domain you had created. On the domain's property page, select Make fallback domain.
  7. A message will display on the page stating that your fallback domain has changed to the new domain.

For more info and instructions, please kindly refer to Add and replace your onmicrosoft.com fallback domain in Microsoft 365 - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn.

Meanwhile, to change existing users to the correct new domain, please check this Change a user name and email address - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn.

Appreciate your patience and understanding and thank you for your time and cooperation. I wish you all the best!

Sincerely,

Connery You

Thank you so much for your detailed reply. I was able to create the new domain and schedule the SharePoint name change for tomorrow night. I very much appreciate your time.
