Changing Email domain for the users in my company

Hi,

I was trying to find similar questions in the community but didn't find the exact issue, hence asking here.

I am an O365 admin and I manage all user accounts for our company. Recently, management decided to move domain from "@abc.com" to "@xyz.com". I purchased "xyz.com" and connect it with my microsoft admin account. The whole process went smoothly.

Now, to move users from one domain to another, what I have done is to change primary email of the users from "@abc.com" to "@xyz.com" and put @"abc.com" in Alias so that they can still receive emails with old domain for a month or two. I will take out old domain from Alias in couple of months. So far. its working fine with all the users.

I would like to know if this is the correct way to do it or am I missing something. I have a doubt that it will have some effect on mailbox or the historical emails if I change their PCs in the future. Please guide me on this.

I think I was not able to explain you properly. Let me try again.

We already have a custom domain and our employees email addresses are setup with that. They have been using custom domain for 5 years. Just Now, company has decided to change company's name and we just purchased a new domain so that we can migrate our users from old custom domain to brand new custom domain.

I linked our new domain(Purchased from Godaddy) with our microsoft O365 account. I changed domain of couple of employees to new domain just by changing their primary email ID and put their old ID (old domain) as ALIAS. So far it is working great.

I would just like to know that is this the most efficient way to transfer the old custom domain to brand new custom domain. Or do I need to follow some more steps, so that I wouldn't lose emails/data from OLD domain mailbox.
