I understand your concern, it seems the changing background feature in the new Planner is missing. For the situation you’ve encountered, I do understand the inconvenience caused and feel very sorry about it.
As far as I know, this is a knowing issue after the new Planner released as you mention as well, currently I’ve monitored this issue as well and I’m afraid and sorry to say this feature is still missing and there’s no perfect workaround to enable this feature. Since the new Planner is a new upgrade recently released as needs your feedback and suggestions to make improvements, Personally, I’m totally understanding and agree with you about the inconvenience of missing this important feature in Planner. In that case, I sincerely suggest you can report this issue to the related Microsoft product development team as they constantly check customer reviews and feedback. And a lot of the features are developed and improved based on customer feedback.
