After an updated version of Word (July 22 2025) the Mendeley Cite plugin for Word start to speed down making the Word to crash automatically and without saving the file.
The proposed work-around of deploying an older version of Office is not working with me nor can I bring it back to life to work normally.

Hi, I found a solution. I am also a corporate Office user, and I figured out how to roll back. This video will help you with that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUJnMWzle1M. My recommendation is to use the 2505 version (build 18827.20202) module from https://config.office.com/deploymentsettings. I’m using it without any issues right now.

Mendeley will provide an update when they have identified the underlying issue. That is basically what they say in the support article for which you provided a link: "We will ensure this page is updated as soon as a fix has been implemented."

Option 5: This is what I'm using already.
Contacting Mendeley support: they propose the same work around of rolling back Office. It doesn't work with me. https://service.elsevier.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/38704/supporthub/mendeley/p/16075/track/1PNSKgqYDv8E~R9dGjIa~yCctQcq4C75Mv8j~zj~PP~q/

    • Word Version: 2506 18925.20184 (July 22 2025)
    • Does the crash happen immediately when you open Word, or only when you try to insert or edit citations? No, it starts to slow down up to the point that I can't write any more, after I try to insert any citation. If this is for a citation changing, I cannot save the file and when exiting it crashes.
    • Have you tried disabling other Word add-ins to see if there's a conflict? Sometimes other plugins interfere with Mendeley Cite. Yes I did. No other Word add-ins are installed.
    • Are you working with a particularly large or complex document (e.g., thesis, report with many citations)? Yes: I'm working with a thesis chapter (around 40 pages).
    • Is this happening on one device or multiple? Multiple.

I tried option 1,2,3 unsuccessfully. I couldn't roll back to a previous Office configuration, I always get a "Couldn't install. We couldn't find the specified configuration. Check the file path and file name". Error 0-2048 (0).
I check and recheck and everything is according with your guidance. I made the config file to roll back to version 18827.20202.
If I put in cmd "setup.exe /configuration config.xml.txt" it runs but when I reach Word to check for updates and supposedly roll back I get the information error 30183-27 (400).

    Still can't do nothing

    Dear @Óscar david Gomes Cabral,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand that technical issues can be frustrating, and I’d love to help you resolve this. Before giving you the best solution, could you please confirm these questions below to help me diagnose the issue more effectively:

    • Which version of Word are you currently running? You can check this by going to File > Account > About Word.
    • Does the crash happen immediately when you open Word, or only when you try to insert or edit citations?
    • Have you tried disabling other Word add-ins to see if there's a conflict? Sometimes other plugins interfere with Mendeley Cite.
    • Are you working with a particularly large or complex document (e.g., thesis, report with many citations)?
    • Is this happening on one device or multiple?

In the meantime, here are some recommendations I suggest you try:

Option 1: Reinstall the Plugin via Mendeley Desktop

    Open Mendeley Desktop.

Go to Tools > Install Microsoft Word Plugin.

Close and reopen Word to verify installation2.

    Option 2. Use the Cite-While-You-Write Add-in

    • In Word, go to Insert > Get Add-ins.
    • Search for Mendeley Cite-While-You-Write and install it.
    • This version may offer better stability than the older plugin

    Option 3: Repair Office Installation

    • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    • Select Microsoft Office and choose Change > Quick Repair.
    • If that fails, try Online Repair
    • For more detailed instructions: Repair an Office application

Option 4: Reverting to an earlier version of an Office installation

Since the issue began after a specific update, I recommend you try to roll back again to a previous Office version as a temporary workaround. (Before reverting to an earlier version of an Office installation, weigh the severity of the issue that you're experiencing against the benefits of having the security, performance, and reliability improvements that are included in the latest update.)

For more detailed instructions: How to revert to an earlier version of Office - Microsoft Support

Option 5: Switch to Mendeley Reference Manager

    Option 5: Contact Mendeley Support

If the issue still persists, I recommend reaching out directly to Mendeley support for the most up-to-date guidance or compatibility patches.  Therefore, they will provide the latest recommendation based on the present versions of your current installation.

Visit: Home - Mendeley Support Center

I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this.

I'm looking forward for your reply.
