Can't Access My Microsoft Account – No Option to Select "I don't have any of these" for 2FA

Hello, I'm unable to access my Microsoft account associated with my institute email (student account) because the phone number used for two-factor authentication (2FA) is no longer active. I do know my password, but I cannot complete the identity verification step.

I followed the instructions on the Microsoft support page:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-billing/common-problems-with-two-step-verification-8a5b990f-6f56-4d9d-8c5e-3bd5c0b12ea8

It says that during sign-in, at the "Verify your identity" screen, I should see an option saying "I don't have any of these" to proceed with replacing my security info. However, that button or link is missing for me. The only options I see are the inactive phone number (for text and call).

I'm stuck and unable to update my security information or proceed. Could you please help me with:

  1. How to get the "I don't have any of these" option to appear?
  2. Or any alternative way to regain access to my account?

Thanks in advance for your help.1000065574

    Dear @Melissa Brown Blaeuer,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand you’re unable to complete two-factor authentication (2FA) because your registered phone number is no longer active, and the “I don’t have any of these” option is missing. Here’s how to proceed:

    1. Alternative Account Recovery Options

    Try these steps:

    • Use a different device/browser or Incognito mode to sign in sometimes the option appears under different conditions.
    • Check if your institute’s IT department can reset your 2FA (common for student/org accounts).

    2. Submit an Account Recovery Form

If 2FA is enabled and no recovery options are available, please fill out the official recovery form: Help with the Microsoft account recovery form - Microsoft Support

    • Use a device and location you've previously used to sign in.
    • Provide a working email address (can be temporary or belong to a trusted person).
    • Include as much detail as possible about your account usage (e.g., services used, email subjects, Xbox activity).

    3. For Institute-Managed Accounts

If your email ends with your school’s domain (e.g., @institute.edu), contact your IT admin directly. They often control 2FA settings for student accounts.

For more details, you can refer to the official documentation to: Common problems with two-step verification for a work or school account - Microsoft Support

Let me know if you need further guidance. I’m happy to help!
