I have an A4 picture in a document sized at A4.

I want to change the paper size but maintain its aspect ratio with the picture width fitting the new page width I select.

Is this possible

    Hi mik bennett,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thanks a lot for your question. It is absolutely possible in Microsoft Word to change the paper size and have your A4-sized image automatically scale to fit the new page width while maintaining its aspect ratio, but it requires a few manual steps. Let me guide you through the steps to do it:

    Step-by-Step Instructions:

    Change the Paper Size

    • Go to Layout (or Page Layout) tab.
    • Click Size > choose your desired paper size (e.g., Letter, Legal, A5, Custom Size, etc.).

    Select the Picture

Click once on the picture to select it.

Set the Picture Width to Page Width

    • With the picture selected, go to the Picture Format tab.
    • In the Size group (usually on the right), ensure the “Lock aspect ratio” checkbox is checked:
    • Right-click the image > Size and Position > Under Size, make sure Lock aspect ratio is checked.
    • Then, manually adjust the width of the picture to match the new printable width of your paper.

How to know the Printable Page Width:

The printable width = page width minus margins.

    Example:

    • For A4: Page width = 21 cm. If left/right margins = 2 cm, then printable width = 17 cm. So you’d set the image width to 17 cm.

    To check or change margins:

Go to Layout > Margins, and either choose a preset or use Custom Margins.

Hope this helps. Feel free to get back if you have other questions.

    Best regards,
