MS Office problem

I have a Windows 10 Pro desktop that I've been using MS Office Pro Plus 2007 on for 10 years. Now when I launch a program like Word. it just hangs, and something in the taskbar says error 1730.

I read that I can correct this in Control Panel by selecting Repair. It says "you must be an administrator to remove this program".

This is my computer, and has been from the beginning. No one else uses this computer, nor has anyone else ever used this computer.

I used to enjoy troubleshooting these things but now it's extremely irritating.

What can I do?

How was Office 2007 first installed on your PC? If it was a version that came on an installation disc, you should be able to repair from the disc. Obviously, I realize that you may not have access to (old) installation media.

Other Office versions want me to save in their proprietary formats.

Even before I installed LibreOffice, it was asking for proplusww.msi. What's this?

Eventually, somehow MS office got uninstalled. I lost Wordpad - and those files became unreadable. I also lost MS Picture Manager - which I used all the time.

I was able to reinstall MS Office from a backup that I found. I'm wondering if I should use it. I think those previous issues came up after an 'update'.

I understand, it used to be working but since as it does not receive any update anymore than expected bug would be keep on reappearing. However to proceed with resolving it, you can reinstall the Office and before doing so, please make sure you still have the product key to reactivate it.

    Hi @Chris M,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Sorry for this unwanted experience regarding the uninstallation issue (Error 1730). This issue can be caused by corrupt operating system files or configuration.

In this case, I suggest you use The Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter tool. It will help you automatically repair issues when you're blocked from installing or removing programs. It also fixes corrupted registry keys.

Once you can uninstall Office 2007, I recommend you switch to later versions of Office since this version is end of support. To see which version of Office suits your Windows version, you can visit this article.

Hope this helps. Feel free to get back if you need further assistance.

    Hi,

I would like to set your expectation that Office 2007 is already obsolete and its lifecycle ended on October 10, 2017, which means that there is no longer security update, bug fixes and it would be vulnerable and also compatibility issues with newer windows versions and file formats. And with that said, its practical usability declines over time due to lack of updates. Which could also be the reason why its hangs when trying to open.

To continue using, we suggest to get a latest version of Office.
