Latest windows update (think it was 24h2) has totally bricked my ASUS laptop.

I reported this 8 months ago and it still bricks my laptop.

Why hasn't this update been paused for my asus laptop model?

Microsoft when will this be fixed as I can't update my laptop.

I think after months of searching, I may have found the issue. I believe it is linked to VMD being enabled in my BIOS.

If I disable it, my system won't boot.

How can I disable it and do an in-place upgrade to 25H2? Is this possible, or does anyone know how to solve this without doing a clean install, as I don't want to lose work and have to go through re-installing apps if I can avoid it?

The fix from ASUS is to do a clean Windows 11 install. To me that doesn't seem a fix for a Win 11 update failure and feels like a lack of investigation. Think I'll just wait until the next win 11 update and hope it actually works.

I've tried the restore option, but unfortunately, it also failed.

I also tried the 9 steps above and tried to run the update again, but it still fails.

I've tried a few more things from YouTube, but the update failed again.

Oddly, today I've tried to run the update, and it's no longer available. I checked, and my system is still on 23H2, so not sure why 24H2 is no longer available.

Not sure if you've tried an update so many times and it keeps failing, it removes it or if something else has happened to remove it.

Out of interest, is there a way to work out what driver could be causing the issue, as mentioned earlier, everything is up to date, and the device driver tool is showing everything as being fine?

    1. Make sure that your device has enough space. Your device requires at least 16 GB of free space to upgrade a 32-bit OS, or 20 GB for a 64-bit OS. For more info, see Free up drive space in Windows.
    2. Run Windows Update a few times. Download and install any available updates in Windows Update, including software updates, hardware updates, and some third-party drivers. Use the Windows Update Troubleshooter to fix Windows 11 Update errors.
    3. Check third-party drivers and download any updates. You can find third-party drivers and installation instructions for any hardware you’ve added to your device on the manufacturer’s website.
    4. Unplug extra hardware. Remove all external storage devices and drives, docks, and other hardware you might have plugged into your device that isn’t needed for basic functionality.
    5. Check Device Manager for errors. In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager. Choose Device Manager from the results. In the window that pops up, look for any device with a yellow exclamation mark beside it (you may have to select each category to switch to the list of devices). Press and hold (or right-click) the device name and select either Update Driver Software or Uninstall to correct the errors.
    6. Remove third-party security software. Make sure you know how to reinstall your programs and that any necessary product keys are on hand. Windows Defender will help protect your device in the meantime.
    7. Repair hard-drive errors. In the search box on the taskbar, type command prompt. Choose Command Prompt from the list of results. In the window that pops up, type chkdsk/f C: and press the Enter key. Repairs automatically start on your hard drive, and you’ll be asked to restart your device. Note: You must have administrator permissions on your device to do this.
    8. Do a clean restart into Windows. See How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
    9. Restore and repair system files. In the search box on the taskbar, type command prompt. Choose Command Prompt from the list of results. In the window that pops up, type DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press the Enter key. Thanks, Neil.

I had a backup that I have managed to restore to, so I'm back to where I was before running the update.

But, I'm in the position that I'm stuck on 23h2 and can't update to 24h2.
