Security info replacement

Hello!

I was trying to log into my Microsoft account but I wasn't receiving the email with my code to log in. I don't know how I did this, but I put in another one of my email addresses (my student email to be exact) thinking that the email code would be sent to that address. Instead, I accidentally started the process of replacing my security information for my account with my student address. I didn't intend to do this and I'm unable to log into my account to cancel it. I'm just wondering what this replacement actually entails? Would it be possible to reverse the process once the 30 days is up or have I severely messed something up here? Thanks!

    Dear Jennifer Park,

Thank you for posting to Microsoft Q&A. We are happy to assist you.

I understand you're concerned about accidentally starting the security info replacement process for your account and the 30-day waiting period. Please don't worry, you haven't "severely messed something up." This is a standard security feature designed to protect your account.

What the Security Info Replacement Process Entails

The 30-day waiting period is a crucial security measure. It is designed to protect your account from an unauthorized user who might gain access to your password and try to lock you out by changing your security information.

    • During the waiting period: You will not be able to access or change sensitive parts of your account, such as your password, billing information, or security settings. This is why you are currently unable to log in to cancel the request. This temporary lockdown is a safety protocol to ensure that the request was made by you, the legitimate account owner.
    • The process cannot be canceled: Once the security info replacement process has been initiated, it cannot be canceled. The waiting period must be completed for the new security information to take effect.

    Can the Process Be Reversed?

Yes, you can manage your security information once the process is complete.

After the 30-day waiting period is over, your student email address will become the new security contact for your account. At that point, you will be able to log in and regain full access. You can then:

    1. Log in to your account with your current password and the new security info (your student email).
    2. Go to the "Security" tab and add your old email address back as a security contact.
    3. Remove your student email address if you no longer wish to use it for security purposes.

The best solution is to wait for the 30 days to pass. In the meantime, you can still access your emails from Outlook on the web at https://outlook.live.com if you have recently signed in from a trusted device and browser, as this is considered a sensitive action.

I hope this helps to clarify the situation and ease your mind. I look forward to your next update once the waiting period has been completed.
