How can I block contacts in Teams?

I have recently become aware that Teams is broadcasting my status to all my contacts. As turning this off could only be done for our whole organisation (including my colleagues) and I do need one external group to see my status, I understand that I will have to go through and block each of my 500 contacts one by one.

Another post suggests that I can open a chat, then click the three dots and select, More options and Block. But this is not available to me. All I get with the three dots is Participants/Schedule a meeting/Screen sharing.

How can I block people please? If I can't do this, I guess the next step will be to delete all my contacts or move them over to a google account to keep seperate.

(They've even made it hard to ask a question here! What on earth is a child sub/item!?!?!?)

Hi, as I had left feedback before asking a public question, I did not leave duplicate feedback again. For now the problem has been resolved by me deleting all my outlook contacts (they are saved elsewhere) and changing my status to "Appear Offline". I have raised this with our IT guy, and understand that a solution like Slack or something is being considered as a new HR system for office location is being rolled out last week, so this will all be redundant very shortly thank goodness

    Hi @jgl,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Q&A.

I can see you’ve already looked into this quite a bit, and you’re absolutely right that Teams currently shows your status to all contacts by default.

Microsoft Teams displays your availability (Available, Busy, Away, etc.) to People within your organization and External contacts you’ve previously chatted with

Unfortunately, there’s no built-in way to hide your status from specific individuals. Disabling presence visibility is only possible at the organization level, and doing so would affect everyone, including external groups you still want to stay visible to.

About blocking contacts, you’re correct that some posts mention blocking via the chat window. However, the “Block” option only appears when:

    • You’re chatting with an external user (outside your organization)

    • Your organization’s policies allow blocking

If you don’t see the option, it likely means the contact is internal or the feature is restricted by your Teams environment.

Instead of manually deleting hundreds of contacts or switching platforms, I recommend contacting your Microsoft 365 administrator. They may be able to:

    • Adjust presence visibility settings for your account or group
    • Review external access policies
    • Help you separate internal and external contacts more effectively

This is usually the fastest and most sustainable way to manage visibility and privacy in a business setting.

Please note that as a moderator, I don’t have access to your tenant or account settings, so I’m unable to make changes directly, but I’ll do my best to guide you toward a solution.

If you need any further assistance or have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I'm here to help.

Thank you again for your patience and for choosing Microsoft Q&A forum.
