Sharepoint vs OneDrive...

Old head here and been playing with Microsoft since 3.1. LMAO :P

Anyway, being that they support huge enterprises; one of the things that hurt MS for a while esp in the Fast Pace we are at with this Info Age is been very slow to catch up sometimes.

Today, Aure, Intune, Entra, Exchange, and the rest of it has finally merged down from the enterprise clouds to only powerfull services that can finally not only be perfect for the huge enterprises but also compete with the likes of Google with the SMBs.

But when will they realize that Sharepoint is dead?

I mean why hasn't sharepoint with its basic functionality not been distilled down to OneDrive.

I know that sharepoint is so much more. But for god's sake, no one needs sharepoint to share files anymore. I mean it worked well in token ring; but come on. LOL :P

Cheers,
T

    Dear @Tamer Ziady

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand the confusion, as both SharePoint and OneDrive allow file storage and sharing, but they serve different purposes within Microsoft 365.

I truly appreciate you sharing your perspective on this. To better understand your concern about why some of SharePoint’s basic features haven’t been streamlined into OneDrive, could you let me know which specific functions you have in mind?

In the meantime, I’d be happy to explain the key differences between SharePoint and OneDrive to help clarify their roles

    • OneDrive is designed for personal file storage. It’s ideal for individual work files, drafts, or documents you want to keep private or share with a few people.
    • SharePoint, on the other hand, is a team and organizational collaboration platform. It provides advanced features like team sites, document libraries, version control, workflows, and intranet capabilities, making it essential for structured collaboration and governance across departments.

Microsoft has no plans to retire SharePoint. In fact, SharePoint continues to evolve with new features, including AI-powered tools like Copilot in SharePoint, to make content creation and collaboration easier: Introducing Copilot in SharePoint and new OneDrive experiences | Microsoft 365 Blog

For an official comparison and guidance on when to use each, please refer to this Microsoft documentation: Should I save files to OneDrive or SharePoint? - Microsoft Support

While OneDrive is perfect for personal or draft files, SharePoint remains critical for scenarios where multiple people need controlled, long-term access to shared content. In fact, OneDrive uses SharePoint technology behind the scenes, so work together seamlessly.

I hope this information clears things up and helps you resolve the situation. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Yes, thank you. I am grateful for your comprehensive and informative response.

I am working on a deployment right now with a very small user base - only 6 seats - however, looking to grow considerably in the coming years.

My frustration was whether to spend the time and effort in training and getting this client to understand and use Sharepoint or continue to using OneDrive which they are already familiar with and currently using - although not very effectively or securely.

Your response has convinced me that especially for a company looking to grow and expand in the feature the time and energy spent now will be well worth it for future requirements and organizational security and managment.

Again, thank you for your complete response.

    Cheers,
    T
