(Teams 11 on Win 11) When you copy the entire chat history with CTRL+A and then paste it into Word, you do NOT get all the text from the conversation... but you do get a ton of emojis at least so you know there was something happening. There is a little of the text, but it appears that you have to cut and paste in bits and pieces and then paste the pieces one after another into a Word document.

I'm absolutely amazed that there's no clean way to export a chat history from Teams, nor can you (apparently) even CTRL+A the history. This is a truly basic feature for any chat program, but if the Teams development staff needs to see how this should work, go try Slack. Skype would do it as well. Shucks, even FB's Messenger--not noted for quality--will do this. Pretty much any other chat product that was released after 2000 or so will do this.

    Hi @Troy Cooke,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description, I understand that you are seeking to export Microsoft Teams chat history. Please note that Microsoft Teams does not currently provide a built-in feature to directly export chat history. However, there are two effective workaround methods you can consider:

1/ Save chat as PDF via Teams:

    • Open Teams in a Browser or Desktop App:

Go to https://teams.microsoft.com using Chrome or Edge.

Log in and open the Chats section.

    Load the Full Conversation

Scroll up to load the entire chat history you want to save.

Teams loads messages in chunks, so keep scrolling until you reach the start or desired point and select the entire chat by pressing Ctrl + A

    • Save as PDF:

Paste the desire conversation to Word or PowerPoint

Press Ctrl+P (Windows) or Cmd+P (Mac) or use the browsers or Teams’ menu to select Print.

    Choose “Save as PDF”

In the print dialog, set the Destination to Save as PDF.

    • Verify the output

Open the PDF to ensure all messages and visible media (images, GIFs) are captured.

2/ Compliance Content Search (Admin Only):

Note: This option requires Microsoft 365 Global Administrator or eDiscovery Manager permissions. If you are an end user, please contact your organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator or IT department.

Before running the Content Search, the admin must be a member of the eDiscovery Manager role group in the Microsoft Purview portal. For details instructions, please see this link : Get started with Content search | Microsoft Learn, at the "Before you run a search" section.

Here are the steps that you IT admin can take to help you with exporting the Teams chat:

Go to https://admin.microsoft.com/ and sign in with admin credentials > navigate and click on Microsoft Purview

     User's image

In the left-hand navigation pane, select Audit.

    User's image

From there, you can start a search by specifying the date range, users, and activities (such as Teams messages, file access, etc.).

Once the search is complete, your admin can export the chat history in a readable format (such as CSV or PST), which can then be shared with you securely.

If your request differs from the above, kindly provide additional details so that I can assist you more effectively.

Note: Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this.

Thank you for your patience and your understanding. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

I'm looking forward to your reply.
