Hello, I was working on a Word document that contained weeks of work, and all the data has suddenly disappeared. The file now opens completely empty.

Before this happened, the document became extremely laggy, so I decided to save it and restart Word. After restarting, everything was gone.

The file appears to have the correct size even the word number shown are in thousands but the data is not there at all.

Open the (apparently) blank document and press Alt+F9 (on some laptops, use Fn+Alt+F9), the command to show the codes of any fields in the document. It's possible that the entire content of the document has been placed into the code of a field that doesn't show any result, and this command will reveal it.

If that's the case, carefully select everything except the field braces { } at the beginning and end. Cut that selection to the clipboard. Move the cursor outside the pair of braces and paste the clipboard contents there. Then (again carefully) select the empty braces and delete them. Finally, press Alt+F9 (or Fn+Alt+F9) again, to turn off the field code display and instead show the results of any remaining fields (date, page number, etc.) and save the document.

    Hi @Syed Haseeb Shah

    Welcome to Q&A Community!

Thank you for reaching out. When a Word document becomes laggy, unresponsive, or appears blank, it often indicates file corruption or rendering issues. This can happen due to:

    • Interrupted save process (e.g., Word froze while saving).
    • Complex formatting or large embedded objects causing instability.
    • Corrupted XML structure inside the .docx file.

To make sure we're aligned and avoid from any misunderstanding, please let me know a few details about your issue by answering these questions:

    1. Are you signed in with a personal account (e.g., @hotmail.com, @outlook.com), an education account (e.g., @school.edu), or a work account (e.g., @yourcompany.com)?
    2. Does the issue happen with Word app, web or both? May I know its version?
    3. May I know your Windows version? Has it been updated recently?
    4. Is the document saved locally on your computer, on OneDrive, SharePoint, or another cloud service?
    5. Is it a .docx file or another format?
    6. Do you have AutoSave enabled or know if version history is available?
      • Right-click the file in File Explorer > Properties > Previous Versions.
      • If stored on OneDrive or SharePoint, check Version History online.
    7. When you open the file, do you see a blank page, or is there any unusual formatting (e.g., empty paragraphs, hidden text)?
      • To check for Hidden or White Text: press Ctrl+A to select all text, then set font color to Automatic under the Home tab.
      • Try View > Draft or Outline mode to see if content appears.

As the first troubleshooting step, kindly open and repair the Word document by going to File > Open > Browse > Select your file > Click the arrow next to Open > Open and Repair.

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, please confirm the details above and let me know if you have any other details or screenshots of the error. Kindly remove any personal-related information to ensure security and data protection.

Please understand that our initial response may not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.
