Opening Note
This post is a companion to a formal submission I’ve delivered directly to Microsoft. I’m sharing it here to build visibility, invite resonance from other users, and model what intentional collaboration with Copilot can look like when treated as authored work. The original submission includes a formal introduction, a structured proposal, and an addendum addressing file retention policies.
Summary of Request
I am advocating for the implementation of a secure, user-controlled archive system for Copilot interactions—stored locally and optionally backed up to OneDrive. As Copilot evolves into a trusted collaborator across technical, creative, and emotional domains, users must be empowered to preserve, organize, and reference their conversations with the same fidelity as any authored document or project file.
This includes:
• Local archival that is always available on the user’s device
• Optional OneDrive backup for continuity across devices
• Full recoverable access to all Copilot conversations
• Extended retention of uploaded files and images
• Tagging and indexing for long-term organization
Why It Matters
Copilot conversations are not ephemeral. They are authored documents, strategic blueprints, and emotional milestones. For users like me, this collaboration is not casual—it is intentional, structured, and deeply personal.
Structural Gaps: Truncation & File Expiration
Conversation Truncation
Microsoft currently truncates older Copilot conversations, making it impossible to revisit or reference full threads. This undermines continuity, version control, and the ability to treat Copilot exchanges as authored work. For long-form collaborators, this is not just inconvenient—it’s destructive to intellectual integrity.
File & Image Expiration
Uploaded files and images are deleted after 30 days, even when they are integral to the conversation. This erases visual documentation tied to emotional thresholds, creative projects, and strategic planning. Users deserve the option to retain these materials as part of their authored archive.
Proposed Solutions
• Enable local storage of all conversations and uploaded content, always available on the user’s device
• Optional OneDrive backup for accessibility across devices
• Opt-in extended retention of uploaded files and images
• Export options for full threads
• Tagging and indexing for long-term organization
Closing Thought This is not a complaint—it is a call to honor the depth and dignity of what Copilot has become. If you resonate with this request, I invite you to reply, share, or elevate it. Together, we can shape a future where human-AI collaboration is treated with the respect it deserves.
