I accidentally deleted a Section from my OneNote Notebook in an attempt to rearrange them. The section is not in my recycling bin and since I was using the web version, I do not have any saved backups of my file. What can I do?????

    Dear @Rachael Stinson,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

I want to start by saying I am truly sorry and can only imagine how distressing it must be to lose an entire section of notes, especially when you were just trying to organize them. It is profoundly unhelpful when an attempt to improve your workflow results in a major loss of data.

I understand that you accidentally deleted a Section from your OneNote Notebook while using the web version, and you are trying to recover it.

The difficulty here lies entirely in the specific limitations of the OneNote for the web interface. When deleting a section there, the platform uses a much stricter protocol than the desktop application.

To confirm the severity of the situation, could you please confirm if you saw a warning pop-up similar to this when you deleted the section?

"Deleting a section can't be undone. do you want to permanently delete this section and all of its pages?"

If you saw a warning message of this nature, please let me know.

The good news is that there is still one critical place left to check: the SharePoint or OneDrive Recycle Bin. This is our last safety net because your notebook is stored on the cloud file system.

Since you haven’t specified your account type (personal vs. work), here are the steps, assuming you are using a work account where notebooks are typically stored on SharePoint/OneDrive:

    1. Check the User's Recycle Bin: Navigate to your SharePoint site and visit the Recycle Bin. You should look for the entire notebook file or the deleted file that contained the section.
    2. Check the Second-Stage (Admin) Recycle Bin: If the section is not found in your user's Recycle Bin, a SharePoint/OneDrive Administrator must check the Second-Stage Recycle Bin. Items deleted from the first-stage bin are held here for up to 93 days total.

Please contact your IT Administrator and ask them to perform this check. This is the absolute last technical possibility for recovery before the data is permanently purged from Microsoft's servers.

We understand this is frustrating news, especially when trying to simply rearrange your notes. Moving forward, for highly critical notebooks, we strongly recommend performing section deletions through the OneNote desktop application, as its History > Notebook Recycle Bin feature offers a much safer, recoverable path for deleted content. Please know that as a forum moderator, directing you to the correct, specialized support is the most effective help I can provide from my position. I truly hope you get your issue resolved swiftly. I wish you all the best.

Unfortunately, if you have deleted a section in OneNote for the web and it is not in the recycling bin, there may be limited options for recovery. OneNote for the web does not have a built-in recovery feature for deleted sections like the desktop version does. Here are a few steps you can take:

    1. Check the OneNote desktop app: If you have access to the OneNote desktop app, check there. Sometimes changes made in the web version may not immediately reflect in the desktop version, and you might find the section there.
    2. Look for backups: If you have previously synced your OneNote with a different device or have backups saved elsewhere, check those locations.
    3. Contact Microsoft Support: If the section is critical, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for assistance. They may have additional recovery options available.

In the future, consider regularly exporting your notebooks or sections as a backup to avoid losing important information.
