A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Dear @Ramesh Subedi,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft 365 Q&A forum community and explaining your concern. I completely understand how distracting the Copilot icon can be when you prefer to use Copilot only from the dedicated app. Let me guide you through the available options.
The Copilot pen icon in Word is part of the integrated Copilot experience in Microsoft 365 apps. While it cannot be fully removed in all builds yet, you can disable Copilot features or hide the icon from the ribbon to minimize its presence.
Option 1: Disable Copilot in Word
- Open Microsoft Word.
- Go to File > Options.
- In the left panel, select Copilot.
- Uncheck Enable Copilot.
- Click OK, then restart Word.
(If you don’t see the Copilot tab, update Word to the latest version.)
Even if Word is updated, if the icon still doesn't appear in the options section, it may be because your organization has enabled Copilot in Microsoft 365 which doesn't allow users to remove it from office.
For detailed guidance, refer to Microsoft’s official documentation: Turn off Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps - Microsoft Support
Option 2. Disable Copilot Organization-Wide
If you want Copilot completely disabled in Word:
- Only your IT admin can do this via Microsoft 365 Admin Center or PowerShell.
- Admin guide: Manage Microsoft 365 Copilot Scenarios | Microsoft Learn and Updated Windows and Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat experience | Microsoft Learn
For PowerShell uninstall option (please action by IT amdin):
If you don’t need the Copilot functionality in Word and want to remove it entirely, you can ask your IT department to uninstall it using PowerShell commands:
$packageFullName = Get-AppxPackage -Name "Microsoft.Copilot" | Select-Object -ExpandProperty PackageFullName Remove-AppxPackage -Package $packageFullName
If these steps do not fully remove the icon, it’s because the design is currently controlled by Microsoft and cannot be overridden at the user level. In that case, I recommend:
- Go to Help > Feedback > I don’t like something in Word.
- Or submit feedback via Ideas · Community.
I truly hope you understand that the initial steps I suggested may not have completely resolved the issue, as there might still be underlying causes, we haven't uncovered yet. Please know that I’m here with you every step of the way, ready to work together and do everything I can to help troubleshoot and find the best solution.
I truly understand how important a clean workspace is for productivity, and I’m here to assist you further if needed. Please let me know if you have any further questions or if the problem persists after trying these solutions. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
