    Dear @AMY GATINAO,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft 365 Q&A forum community support team. I understand the critical nature of this issue, especially with your teaching work, and I apologize for the disruption you're experiencing. The fact that the quick repair option fails means we need to use more direct methods. Please follow these steps in order.

Option 1: Run the Office online repair

This is a more thorough version of the repair tool you already tried and is the best next step.

    1. Close all Office applications.
    2. Go to Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features).
    3. Find your Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office installation in the list.
    4. Click the three dots next to it, select Modify, and then choose Online Repair (this is more thorough than Quick Repair). Follow the prompts.
    5. After the repair office, you can reset the computer.

For detailed guidance step by step, please refer to Microsoft’s official documentation: Repair an Office application - Microsoft Support

Option 2: Start Word in Safe Mode

If the Online Repair is taking too long and you need a file immediately, try this to bypass the error.

    1. Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.
    2. Type winword /safe and press Enter.
    3. If Word opens successfully in Safe Mode, it means the error is likely caused by an add-in. You can then go to File > Open and browse to recover your specific document.
Once you have your document, you can manage add-ins by going to File > Options > Add-ins. However, we recommend completing option 1 for a permanent fix.

If the error continues after the Online Repair, we have further advanced steps, such as clearing the Office credential manager or checking for Windows updates, which we can guide you through.

We are confident one of these solutions will get you back to your teaching work promptly. Please let me know the outcome of option 1, and we will proceed from there.

Repair Now is sometimes not sufficient and an Online repair is needed. This is more comprehensive.

It sounds like you're experiencing a common issue with Microsoft Word where it encounters an error and cannot open. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem:

    1. Start Word in Safe Mode: You can try to start Word in Safe Mode to see if that helps. To do this, press Windows + R to open the Run dialog, type winword /safe, and press Enter. This will open Word without any add-ins that might be causing the issue.
    2. Repair Office: Since you mentioned that the repair prompt disappears, try repairing Office through the Control Panel:
      • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Find Microsoft Office in the list, select it, and then click on Change.
      • Choose Repair and follow the prompts.
    3. Delete Word Data Registry Subkey: If the above steps do not work, you can try deleting the Word Data registry subkey:
      • Exit all Office programs.
      • Type regedit in the Search box and press Enter.
      • Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\[Your Word Version]\Word\Data and delete the Data key. Be sure to back up the registry before making changes.
    4. Check for Updates: Ensure that both Windows and Office are up to date. Sometimes, updates can resolve underlying issues.
    5. Clear Disk Space: If your disk is full, it might prevent Word from functioning properly. Use Disk Cleanup to free up space on your hard drive.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for further assistance.
