Hi Keith Brown,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. I'm happy to help.
A .dat file is a generic data file, so the way to open it depends on what created it. Here are some steps you can try:
1. Check the Source
If the file came from an email (especially Outlook), it might be a winmail.dat file. This happens when emails are sent in Rich Text Format.
- Ask the sender to resend the email in HTML or Plain Text format.
- Or use a free tool like Winmail Opener to view the contents.
2. Try Opening in a Text Editor
If you're not sure what created the file, open it in Notepad or another text editor. If it contains readable text, you'll see it right away.
3. Rename the File Extension
Sometimes .dat files are misnamed. If you suspect it's a video or image, try renaming it to .mp4, .jpg, etc., and open with the appropriate app.
4. Security Tip
Always scan the file for malware before opening it, especially if it came from an unknown source. You can use Microsoft Defender for this.
If none of these work, contact the sender and ask what program created the file as they'll know the best way to open it.
