Word Editing Time

My Word document is showing Editing Time only 0–5 minutes, but I actually worked on my assignment for many hours. I don’t understand why it is showing so low time. I was not working on any draft or other file, this is the only document I was using the whole time.

Now my university is asking me why the time is like this, and I am very confused and worried. I don’t know how this happened. Can you please tell me why Word is showing wrong editing time?

    Dear @Ann,
Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand you’re concerned because your Word document shows only a few minutes of Editing Time, even though you worked on it for hours. That can be confusing, especially when your university is asking about it.
I would like to clarify that The Editing Time property in Word is not designed to measure actual working hours. It only tracks how long the document was open for editing and can reset in common scenarios such as:

    • Using Save As or creating a copy of the file.
    • Moving the file to another location.

So, if you would like to show your work, I suggest that:

    • Version History: If your document is saved in OneDrive or SharePoint, you can view timestamps of edits and previous versions.
    • File Properties: Check “Date created” and “Date modified” in Windows Explorer.
    • Autosave points: If Autosave was enabled, the cloud service may have multiple save points.

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

I truly appreciate your patience and understanding. If you have any further questions or need further clarification, please feel free to reach out. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

    Thank you for your cooperation.

These "statistics" kept by Microsoft have never been of forensic value - they are not reliable. It is possible to have modification dates before creation dates and creation dates from impossible periods. The Editing time represents how long that file was open for editing on the computer, even times when the user was playing solitaire or taking a nap.

The editing time displayed in Microsoft Word may not accurately reflect the total time spent working on a document due to several factors:

    1. AutoSave Feature: If you're using AutoSave, Word saves changes to the document automatically, but it may not count all the time spent actively editing if you are not consistently making changes.
    2. Active Editing Sessions: Word tracks editing time based on active sessions. If you leave the document open without making changes, the time may not accumulate. Additionally, if you switch to another document or application, the editing time may pause.
    3. Document State: If the document is opened from a location that does not support full tracking (like certain network drives), it might not record the time accurately.
    4. Corruption or Software Issues: Sometimes, issues with Word itself or the document can lead to incorrect reporting of editing time. If the document is damaged or if there are software glitches, it may impact how editing time is recorded.

To address this, ensure that you are actively editing the document and consider checking for any updates or repairs needed for Word. If the problem persists, you might want to consult Microsoft support for further assistance.
