    Hi @Morten Brinkmann Jensen

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum. You are absolutely correct! Restricting editing and protecting specific sections is not fully supported in Word Online. According to Microsoft's official feature comparison documentation, Word Online currently provides only read-only protection. This means that when you protect a document in Word Online, it can only be viewed in read-only mode, without granular section-level control.

Therefore, based on what I know, Microsoft generally recommends using the Word desktop version for advanced protection features. The product team is aware of this limitation in Word Online; however, there is currently no confirmed timeline for improvements in this area.

I understand this may not be the answer you were hoping for, and I agree that having this functionality in Word Online would be very useful for scenarios where teams collaborate in the browser and need granular control over document section. But as a forum moderator, my role is to assist based on public documentation, research, and community experience, I don’t have the ability to modify or escalate product issues directly.

I strongly recommend submitting feedback here: Word · Community and clearly describe your use case and why this feature matters to you.

Posts on this forum are not visible to the product team, but submitting feedback through the official channel ensures your input goes directly to them and can be considered for future improvements. If you share the link to your feedback post in the comments here, I’ll be happy to vote for it to help bring more visibility.

Thank you again for raising this important point. Many other users may also need this feature, so if this answer helps confirm the current limitation and provides a clear path to request improvements, please click “Accept Answer” and kindly upvote it. Doing so will pin this post to the top, making it easier for others to find and support your feedback, this action is meaningful because it amplifies your voice and helps the community rally behind the same request.

We truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we work together to make Word Online better!

In Word for the web, there are limitations regarding restricting editing and protecting specific sections of documents. While you can open documents with restricted editing, they will only be viewable in read-only mode. To modify unrestricted sections, you must open the document in the desktop app. Additionally, features like Document Inspector and certain protection methods are not available in Word for the web, which limits the ability to fully protect specific parts of a document compared to the desktop version.

For more comprehensive document protection, including the ability to restrict editing and protect specific sections, using the desktop version of Word is recommended.
