    Dear @Bethany Ziegler [KDOL],

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand that you’re looking to restrict Team members from editing files in a channel’s associated SharePoint site. To achieve this, you’ll need to adjust the permissions of the underlying SharePoint site, as this cannot be configured directly within the Microsoft Teams app.

By default, any user added as a Member in Microsoft Teams is granted Edit permissions on the associated SharePoint site. However, you can override this behavior by modifying the SharePoint permissions.

Below are the steps to restrict those permissions:

    1: Access Advanced SharePoint Permissions

    1. In your Teams channel, go to the Files tab.
    2. Click the three dots (...) > Open in SharePoint.
    3. Once the browser opens, click the Settings (gear icon) in the top right corner.
    4. Select Site permissions and then click Advanced permissions settings at the bottom of the pane.

    2: Modify the "Members" Group

In the Advanced Permissions page, you will see a list of groups (Owners, Members, and Visitors).

    1. Look for the group named [Team Name] Members.
    2. Check the box next to this group.
    3. Click Edit User Permissions in the top ribbon.
    4. Uncheck Edit (which allows adding/deleting files) and check Read.
    5. Click OK.

3: Stop Permission Inheritance (For Specific Folders)

If you only want to restrict a specific folder within the channel rather than the whole site:

    1. Navigate to the specific folder in SharePoint.
    2. Click the three dots (...) next to the folder name and select Manage access.
    3. Click Advanced settings in the top right.
    4. Click Stop Inheriting Permissions in the top ribbon.
    5. Now, follow the steps in Step 2 to change the "Members" group from Edit to Read for just that folder.

    Notes:

    • This means that members will still see the files in Teams, but they will receive an "Access Denied" or "Read Only" message if they try to upload, delete, or edit documents.
    • Teams Owners will remain as SharePoint Site Collection Administrators, so they will always retain full editing rights.
    • Any new person added to the Team will automatically be placed into the "Members" group, which will now have the restricted "Read" permissions you just set.

I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this. Thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments so I can continue to support you. I'm looking forward to your reply.
