Hello M. Drew Bradford
Thanks for reaching out to the Q&A forum
From what you shared, I understand you don’t want screenshots taken with the Print Screen key to be auto‑saved on the desktop. Instead, you’d like Greenshot to handle them and choose a custom save location. Here are some suggestions for you:
1. Control how Windows saves screenshots by changing screenshot folder location
Method A: Pictures > Screenshots (folder) > Right‑click > Properties > Location > Move > Choose folder > Apply > Yes/No > OK
Method B: Change screenshot save location via Registry Editor
Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
In Registry Editor, navigate to:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Find the entry named {B7BEDE81-DF94-4682-A7D8-57A52620B86F}
Double‑click it and set the value to the folder path where you want screenshots saved.
If the change doesn’t apply immediately, restart your PC.
Additional check: Sometimes, OneDrive or another sync tool might be intercepting the key as well. That’s why checking OneDrive’s screenshot setting is worth doing: Right‑click OneDrive icon > Settings > Backup tab > Screenshots
2. Use Greenshot with Print Screen
Pressing the Print Screen key alone (PrtScn) copies the screenshot to the clipboard without auto-saving to the desktop in classic Windows behavior, but if it's saving a file, the "Use the Print screen key to open screen capture" setting is likely enabled, triggering Snipping Tool which auto-saves.
To let Greenshot handle the Print Screen key, first disable "Use the Print Screen key to open Snipping Tool" in Snipping tool/Windows Setitngs (guidance below)
Once that’s off, pressing PrtSc will return to its default function of copying the screen to the clipboard. After that, you can configure Greenshot to take over and manage screenshots using the PrtSc key.
After turning off the Snipping Tool shortcut, set Greenshot to use Print Screen:
Open Greenshot tray icon → Preferences → Hotkeys → assign Print Screen to your chosen capture mode → Apply/OK.
Hope this helps. Please let me know how it goes or if you need further assistance!
