How to add back school account on Authenticator app

I recently got a new phone and I opened the Authenticator app to receive a sign in code. A notification in the app popped that said the app was locked and that I’ve been signed out of my 2 university accounts. I unlocked the app lock in the Authenticator settings and tried to sign in again, however whenever I tried to sign in on the app a number popped up to authenticate the sign however nothing ever prompted me to enter the number somewhere . Every time I tried, a number popped up and nothing else popped up for me to enter the number. So I removed both accounts from the app hoping to add them back again but now it asks me to sign in to the accounts in order to add them back but I can’t sign in without completing the 2-step verification and I can’t complete it because I removed the accounts from the app because I wasn’t prompted to enter any numbers in the first place. What can I do? Please, this is urgent.

    Hello @Alejandro Mujica,

Thank you for reaching out to the Q&A forum!

Wishing you a Happy New Year 2026!

For your situation, you are currently in a situation where you cannot sign in because you don’t have an active MFA method, and you also cannot add MFA because you’re not signed in. I understand this is very urgent and may disrupt your work or studies.

However, since this is a school/university account, the ability to recover MFA is managed by your organization’s IT department. Microsoft cannot directly intervene in organizational accounts.

So, you need to contact your Helpdesk or IT team as soon as possible and request them to:

Revoke or reset your MFA settings in the Microsoft Entra Admin Center (remove the current authentication methods).

For step-by-step details, refer to the official Microsoft documentation: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID |…

Once your IT administrator resets your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) settings, the next time you sign in to your organization’s resources, you will be prompted to set up new security verification methods.

I understand that this situation can be a bit complicated to contact your school’s IT department, but only your school's IT department can access the backend settings for your Microsoft 365 account.

Find Your Microsoft 365 Admin: If you’re unsure who the Global Admin is within your school, you can find guidance on locating them here: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

User's image Although I am a forum moderator and do not have access to your backend systems to help you directly, I have provided a detailed guide above that you can share with your school’s IT department.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

To add your school accounts back to the Microsoft Authenticator app after removing them, you will need to go through the account registration process again. Here are the steps you can follow:

    1. Access Security Info: Go to the Security info page by visiting Security info.
    2. Add Method: Sign in with your university account and select Add method. Choose Authenticator app and follow the prompts to add it back.
    3. Install Authenticator: If you haven't already, ensure that you have the Microsoft Authenticator app installed on your new phone.
    4. Follow Instructions: After selecting to add the Authenticator app, follow the instructions provided to set it up again. You may need to use a Temporary Access Pass or another verification method provided by your university.

If you encounter issues with the two-step verification, ensure that your phone number is correctly set in your account settings, or reach out to your university's IT support for assistance with the verification process.
